Also, reading out loud is my work fear. I sound worst then a 2nd grader reading out loud. Even when i ready to my self i know its bad. I take really long reading everything. I'd like to expand my vocab. Its very limited. I don't feel I am at a college lever tho I am in college.

How can I improve my spelling and reading.

Please help. Thank you

One of the best ways to improve your spelling (and grammar, and writing) is to read everything and anything - newspapers, comic books, novels, advertisements, whatever. It takes a while, mind you, but it will really help to see what other people have written. If you're in a hurry, then writing things (letters, short essays, restaurant reviews, complaints about your roommate, etc.) and having someone friendly edit and critique your writing with you will help.
Reading aloud is more of a pain - this is not unique to you; many of us struggle with it. The only real help I've ever found is to practice, practice, practice. Read to anyone you can - kids are great, by the way - and hopefully you'll find yourself getting more comfortable. Hang in there; it's like losing weight - there's no quick and easy substitute for persistence and practice.

Just a suggestion. Try looking at this website and see if some of their resources might help:

http://www.avko.org/

We use their Sequential Spelling course for my son with reading/spelling difficulties. He has made remarkable progress in a very short period of time. Don McCabe, the director of the program is a dyslexic man who developed the system. I have suggested it many times to others as young as 8 and as (young) as 45. I have never had anyone give anything but positive feedback on the results.

Also, you may want to try colored gel overlays. They are little sheets of acetate film in blue, green, pink, yellow, etc. Some people use them to decrease the contrast between the print color and the color of the paper. It made my son's words "stop swimming around the page". They were suggested by a neurologist and he has used them for almost 2 yrs. At first he could barely read aloud without them, now he seldom needs to use them and reads quite well. You can usually get them at your local teacher's store.

One other thought...try large print books and see if that doesn't help some. Though you may not have a vision problem, sometimes that has helped people with "different" reading styles. And in college, you may want to talk to your counselor/advisor, they should know how to refer you to the right people at the campus. There are many people in college who are very dyslexic. There are adaptive strategies that can be used, for instance books on tape (like are used for the visually impaired). Try taping your lectures and typing the notes up later on computer in large font and see if that helps.

Best wishes for gooooooood results. And don't let fear take over. You can work with this problem OR work around it.

First, stay off Yahoo answers, because only 15% of the answers have correct spelling.

For spelling, see if you can find a child's workbook in a book store. Start with the lowest level you think you are and work your way up.

For reading, just do a lot of reading. Try reading into a tape recorder and playing it back so you can really hear yourself and concentrate on where you need help.

Good for you for wanting to improve yourself.
