first, take the whole number which is 8 and multiply it by 5, equals 40. now do the fraction. first u take the 4 of the fraction or the numerator and multiply it by 5 also u get 20. now put 5 the denominator, or other number in the fraction and divide that into 20. 20 divided by 5 = 5(a whole number). 8 is also a whole number so add up the two whole numbers 8 & 5 and u get the whole number 13. for 10/5 fix the fraction which is improper by dividing 5 into 10= 2(a whole number) u still have the whole number 13 left so add the two whole numbers together. 2+13=15. 15 is ur answer.

you are showing it as multiplying not subtraction: but I'll help and work it like a subtraction problem:

8 & 4/5
- 5 & 10/5 they have a common denominator so we are good there that is the first thing you have to do when either adding or subtracting fractions or mixed numbers containing fractions get a common denominator.

The problem is that 10/5 is larger than 4/5 so you will have to borrow 1 from the eight like this.

7 & 4/5 + 5/5 which gives you 7 & 9/5

7 & 9/5
- 5 & 10/5 The 9/5 is smaller than 10/5 so you will have to borrow 1 from the 7 making it

6 & 9/5 + 5/5 which gives you 6 & 14/5

6 & 14/5
- 5 & 10/5 now we can subtract since 14/5 is larger than 10/5
--------------
1 & 4/5 as your answer when subtracting.

Of course you could have done it a lot easier since 10/5 is going to equal to 2

5/5 = 1 , 10/5= 2, 15/5 = 3 etc.

that will give you

8 & 4/5
-7
-------
1 & 4/5

hope that helps.

8 4/5 - 5 10/5 =
44/5 - 35/5 =
9/5

You need to make 8 and the 5 with the 4/5 and 10/5 ... so all you do is do 8 x 5 = 40 + 4 = 44 and with the other its 5 x 5 = 25 + 10 = 35. You the subtract 44 - 35 = 9 and you put the 5 under so its 9/5. Hope this helps!
