I am very interested in childhood education and literacy. I would love to work with children in this type of environment. I do not want to be a teacher, though. I don't want that kind of responsibility. I have considered some kind of tutoring, but don't know what to look for as far as that is concerned. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

I have just started in the sub area and have done elementry. I am still working on classroom management skills. Today; unfortunately, I had to be the "mean teacher" because it was a fifth grade and they were really trying to see what they could get away with. I got extremely frustrated and had the talk with them Which after the rest of the day went quite well. I am eventually going to try to get a job in social study field (what my certification is in) for a middle school and need a little advice on the best classroom management for middle school, what works and does not for middle school level. Also any ideas "just in case" for busy work?

This is my second year teaching and I teach second grade. First thing this morning as students were coming in and handing in papers, one boy handed me a note and said it was from another student in my room. I looked at this other student and I smiled and asked him if he had a note for me and if that was it and he said no. Well, I opened it and it said-You are sexy... I want to have sex with you....I want to feel your boobs... etc. I took it to the counselor who said she would be gone the rest of the day and then handed it and my students' journals (to compare writings) to the assistant principal. None of the other students knew what was going on. The two boys were taken out by the principal and assistant principal a couple of times. Still, I don't know what they found out. What is going on? Has anyone ever experienced this before. This makes me feel sick. I wonder if the child is being abused at home.

I was wondering if there was anyone out there that could explain to me the Writing to Learn (W2L) Stretegy? It's part of the Teaching and Learning strategies for the Ontario Curriculum. I don't quite understand the description it gives can anyone make sense of this:

W2L describes a process in which students develop new knowledge and understanding through writing in a variety of formats. W2L may be used by the teacher to assess students' understanding in a particular area of study and by students to assess their own understanding. W2L allows students to draw om prior knowledge, engage in new learning experiences confidently, and communicate new learning. It supports reflection and improves communication skills by helping students focus & synthesize their thoughts. Students can use the strategy as a follow-up to a lesson to summarize text, response and process.

My oldest daughter is in 2nd grade and is having a very difficult time. In Kindergarten and 1st grade she was above average and excelled at everything in school. Her teachers told me that Olivia had it together. She was polite, thoughtful, respectful, straight A student (in 1st), and always paid attention. This year is disaster. She is bringing home some D's and F's. She's had to stay in for many recesses to finish work that she didn't complete during the morning. She is bringing home much homework that the other children completed in school. She says she hates reading now. (last year she was reading Level 1, 2 & 3 books with ease and loved to read) She has been in trouble twice on the playground for pushing another girl. She promises she didn't do it. No one from the school has told me about this, only Olivia and she's upset about it. She also has not brought her work home on occassion and she cries and says she can't concentrate. Sound familiar? I want to help her. Thanks

My teacher was yelling at me cause my friend was passing a note to me and it was about her.The note said she was a crazy bi**h and she is she hits her kid and then tells every one like its a good thing.When she asked me who wrote the note I didn't and won't say she also asked me if I thought the note had reason to say that about her and I told her "honestly I think some one should beat you and see how you like it and than they should put you in a crazy home" and then she send me to the principle.Not that she really did anything to me cause this teacher always has a prab with someone but I have detention for about a week.
