I am very interested in childhood education and literacy. I would love to work with children in this type of environment. I do not want to be a teacher, though. I don't want that kind of responsibility. I have considered some kind of tutoring, but don't know what to look for as far as that is concerned. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

I have an Associate's degree in General Studies and am working towards a Bachelor's. I don't have any specialized education in teaching.

Children psychology or director of a school. Teacher assistant is another possibility, you get to work with children and it does not have so much responsibility.
You sound like a social worker, working with poor children or homeless children..maybe unicef...
These are just possiblities, hope you find the job you want. And working with children is great and lots of fun!!

You might want to try Special Educational Teaching. It is a very challenging career especially if your interested in childhood education. It takes a very special person though to deal with handicapped children but the satisfaction you get in seeing the progress they make gives you a real heartfelt self satisfaction in being able to help those that are helpless in achieving a place in life if not for those that really care. I was an instructor for over four years and taught adults that were under educated and it was really a good feeling when I saw them achieve a goal that they never would have had if it were not for my teaching them how to do it. Several tried to coax me into going into teaching but I didn't feel I was qualified enough to do so. Today I wish I would have.

Children's Librarian sounds right up your alley. It is a municipal job.. so you get great benefits and pay. Unfortunatley you need a masters in library science for this postion. Which is a hard subject to find at most colleges. I work at a library and find it to be great for people who love children and literacy. You could do storytimes and afterschool homework programs. There is so much creativity to the job description. Most libraries pay their librarians about 30-45k for Children/Youth services Librarian.

Good Luck in your searching.

What about student services teacher? It's not a classroom teacher, so while you still have responsibility it's different. You work with children one on one to develop programs for them that will be suited to their needs, the classroom teacher and the child's care worker work to carry out your plan. School psychologist is another alternative. Or what about school librarian?
You have a lot of options.

You may be able to get an advocacy job for government services or private organizations.

While you are still in school you may want to consider volunteering with such an organization. That may set you up for a paying job after graduation.

Good Luck!
