I'm a teacher. When I pat one of my students on the back I am truly proud of them.

As a teacher I can tell you that I'm never phony in the classroom---it's always genuine. Phoniness is usually an action reserved for pretentious adults or people who need to be lied to because they are above you in position and can't handle reality (bosses etc.) With students teachers are at their most genuine and real.

Of course she is thankful. Unless the teacher is evil or twisted. As weird as it may seem, teachers are human beings too.
