I am a college instructor, and as this semester is winding down, I find myself very frustrated at the problems I am getting with the last few papers. I make every effort to explain the assignment clearly both in the assignment sheet and in class, but still students turn in assignments that are very different from my expectations (APA style instead of MLA, which I understand for the first few papers, but this is the end of the semester, for example).

One student, who I have had in several classes, told me recently that he wasn't sure about the assignment and asked some of his friends in the class. He (and them!) did the assignment wrong.

I frequently tell my students to ask me if they have a question, either during my office hours or by email, but they don't. Any suggestions or explanations?

My best friend and I are rooming in the dorms at a University. She and I get along decently well, just a few minor differences, like occassional messes and sleeping habits, and her boyfriend. She has a nightly ritual of having her boyfriend tuck her in (and snuggle) for about 1 hour or more, ending about 1:30 nightly. She thinks I fall asleep right away, I don't and I told her I don't, and I don't want to hear their cooing into the early hours, but she's uncomfortable having this routine in his room. I miss having our fun friend time, and rooming together frustrates me, but I'm afraid to leave because I don't want hard feelings. Advice?

I am a junior right now and I plan on taking GRE next year (I hope I am not too late). People recommend to take it before it changes in september. And I also heard that we should register early because there will be many people trying to take it before it changes.

So my questions are:

1. How long does it take to prepare for it?

2. Can I register early (like now) for a test half a year in advance?

3. Do you recommend taking GRE before it changes also?

4. My weakest portion is the verbal. I heard that it's helpful to read newspapers/megazines to learn more new words. Which one do you recommend?

5. If I want to leave enough time to retake the GRE (only if I need to), how much time should I put off before September (including receiving the score from the first test and then register and take the second one befoer September)?

Thanks a lot!

"One can live peacefully enough in a dungeon, but such peace will hardly, of itself, ensure one’s happiness?"

This is a quote by Jean Jacques Rosseau. I am putting this quote in my essay, but I have been trying to understand what it means. I am relating it to gay marriage and how it is unfair for gays because they can't pursue happiness just like any other person. I am having a ton of trouble trying to write essays. help?
