I have to give a public speech on Tuesday and I'm not sure how many pages of A4 would account for 10 minutes of speaking at a slow steady pace. Could someone please help me out here?

Read your paper in front of a mirror and time yourself. I read about 1 page every 2 minutes. Remember you will talk slightly faster in front of a group.

I'm not sure what the above 32 comment refers to, but it's waaay too high for number of pages!

Each page take a couple of minutes. It's best if you are not reading your presentation though. Ideally, you would practice enough that some of it you can just say so you're not looking down on your sheet all the time.

Ten minutes is actually quite short. Make sure NOT to start with a "mini" introduction that is not in your paper. People often blow half of their alloted time on side comments of that sort.

Here's the rule to follow when reading directly from a text:

20 minutes = 8-10 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, without footnotes.

Therefore, 10 minutes = 4-5 pages, double spaced, TNR 12 point font, without footnotes.

If you will be departing from your text in any way (elaborating, clarifying, commenting, distributing handouts, explaining graphs or charts, taking questions during the time given), eliminate a page.
