I record a lot of TV shows (around 100 one hour shows into 25 DVD-RW's every month) I first bouhgt an Insignia DVD/VCR combo, but after only 4 months of usage, it no longer works properly. I have been told that most DVD recorders can only record a couple of hundred times before the hardware can no longer record properly. is this true? if so, is there a high end or "heavy use" dvd recorder out there? any links to where i can buy it or find more information on this specific question?

Please tell me I have a Sony DVD player - you have to format new discs before recording and then it asks if you want to finalize the disc after recording so that you can play it on other DVD players . Does this mean that once finalized you cannot record or edit on that disc?

I'd like to replace my VCR with a DVD/HardDrive device without having to subscribe to TiVo, etc.

Basically, I'm looking for something that has NO subscription.

Is this a feasible option? Is there a product that I can schedule to record shows and have them stored on the HardDrive and later burned onto DVD? What brand/product would you most recommend? My entertainment system primarily comprise of Panasonic components.

Thanks for your help to these questions.

I live just north of Houston, and I've been researching various options for cable channels, and I'm curious to hear suggestions. I've researched both dish and cable, and both seem to offer similar deals and prices. I don't care about HD - I'd just like a basic spread of cable channels.

In a nutshell, I'd like a basic cable package (like a 'basic 100' plan with local channels) but I'm not sure what, in the long run would be the best way to go. Is it best to stick with one of the big plans, like AT&T's dish, or go with one of the unheard of companies advertized in the mail (such as one I just got for dishASAP.com). Is there one option better than another?

I'd like to hear recommendations or ideas from your experience.

Thanks.

Because currently I'm using my vcr and it sucks because its about 10 years old. I thought a dvd recorder would be a nice way to record shows that I miss and also be my cable box.

I don't know if it's an incompatability issue with Vista but my old computer with XP converted my Media Center recorded TV to my ZVM withouth any problems but not with my new computer with Vista on it. Technically it's Windows Media Player that converts recorded TV to your player. I just don't know why it's not working now.

Recently my universal remote stopped working with my cable box. It wouldn't do anything, no channel change, no info button, no guide, settings, etc. not even my VOD button worked. however it would still change the volume on the television. i also tried using my old remote that wasn't all fancy and all it would do was change the channels, and that remote didn't work either, so it's clearly not the remote that's the problem. i tried wiping down the cable box to clean it, and that hasn't helped. I was wondering if there was anything else i could do before i tried calling comcast to try and get a replacement box.

My friend lives where no cable service is available. Is there anything like TIVO that she can use to record her television programs. Not a VCR. Something that will find the programs and record them every week.
