I would opt for a quality DVD-Recorder with built in Hard Drive PVR.
DVD's have the advantage of being capable of archive storage, however the media requires Formatting in advance of use and has a Multiple second "Spin Up" time from warm. You also require a blank one to hand for "Spare of the Moment" Recordings. Unless you set your recorder to a lower quality, you won't get to record a full film because of all of the included adverts.
Hard Drive based PVR's are always prepared for use and have Millisecond from warm "Spin Up" times". You can record a film and guarantee that you see the end (even when it over runs!) You can also set multiple recordings and not worry about recording lengths.
An amalgamation of both DVD-R/RW and PVR is the Best of both worlds, as "On the Fly" Recording is achievable at the push of a button and later archival is possible if required.

I chose to go with a HD PVR rather than a DVD recorder for several reasons.
- It serves to provide both the programming and the storage/playback (A DVD recorder still requires a satellite receiver or cablebox source for programming to record)
- Recordings are much higher quality while as simple (or simpler) to operate relative to a VCR, while (depending on model and signal type (SD or HD)) allowing up to 80 hrs of recording, all while supporting pausing, fast forward through commercials and replaying of live programming, etc.
- You can watch one program while recording another (or two others on some models)
- No recordable DVD disks to buy
As a downside, you do not end up with a permanent copy of the program (e.g DVD), although you can record to a DVD Recorder if you have both.

DVD recorder 1st, pvr 2nd, simply for the reason, when the pvr is full you have to put the contents onto video or DVD anyway... (more user friendly) sky+ is excellent though....
i brought a Philips DVD Recorder for £300 3 years ago and its packed up, Philips customer care stinks, its a known 'laser-fault' and they wont help me unless i pay £140 fees... lovely!!!
so i brought a LG one and its great, no problems with it whatsoever.... Much Better.
