Software - October 2007

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for university next year, and I'm wondering whether to get Windows Vista or Xp for it. Friends are telling me to get XP, becuase of the issues vista has associated with it being new. But it's been out for about six months now.
I don't want to spend more than $1700 (Australian) on the laptop.
So I'm looking at about 1gb RAM, 120gb hard drive and a dual processor.
I'm comfortable with having XP at the moment, but I will have to upgrade eventually and I don't want to fork out big bucks later on.
So what do you think?

Honestly I'm not trolling, I really want to know.
Considering how easy it is to obtain a pirated copy of Windows, does anyone REALLY use Linux at all? Lots of people download Linux, but downloads do not mean copies being installed and put to use.

When I Google searched the term "Linux cr*p" I found several comments by people who have tried Linux and had to give up on it because it's too complicated and incompatible.

I find the idea of having to type obscure lines of code to make an application or a game work ridiculous. If I have to do anything more complicated than point my mouse at a button and click "Install, Next, Finish" then Linux has FAILED.
Windows has been point&click for more than a decade.

Should I spend a whole weekend trying to set up Linux or forget it?

03 came on the computer for 90 days only. I tried drag and drop but the files became corrupted. Every time I produce a file, it seems to want to go into 03 and I cannot work with it.

I am using Ubuntu 7.04 - 2.6.20 kernel.I need to activate my wireless USB disk by updating the kernel to 2.6.22.4.The present kernel is not able to provide me the proper driver for that USB disk.I knew this becos the same disk works in Fedora7.

I installed NDISWRAPPER but its unable to see my wireless disk.I tried wifirader too but no success in Ubuntu.
My question is.. how to upgrade my kernel in ubuntu without internet connection?I can download the kernel thro Fedora and put it in shared drive to use back in Ubuntu.If can,what are the things to download and how to go about?
Pl explain in simple language as I am not an IT man.

each time I install something, TWO desktop icons appear. When I try to remove one of them, the other goes too... what ever I try I can't seem to find out WHY there appear two of them instead of one... Any ideas???????? ( about one year ago I had a system crash... 85% restored, but then two icons... and it never was right again... ) win xp home. sp2.

i bought sec.hand laptop decided to change user name and password, on doing so i was prompted to reboot which i did. now im prompted to type correct password which i assume is the one used by previous owner. is there any way around this? when i try to lg in as guest im told the account is disabled, maybe it would be possible to get around this by somehow enabling guest account from the log on screen. ive tried everything in the advance menu (f8) it all comes back to the same prompt. the laptop is a "toshiba 9100 tecra pentium 4 processor on nt technology.. please help as i know not what to do. thanks!!

Hiya,
I bought the new MS Office the other month, but lost the CD and case.

I've had my computer wiped due to a trojan and had to download office from the internet, but this version only has US dictionary which is really no use to me. Is there any kind of patch or update I can download to get UK dictionary installed as well or instead of the US?

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro, and today when I got home, at about 10:45pm EST, I noticed my computer had restart, probably due to a storm and power outage, but when I left this morning, I left Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 running because it takes a while to scan. However... When I tried to log on to my account at the XP logon screen, the characters of my password would appear very slowly, maybe 2 would pop up, then ten seconds later the third dot would pop up... even though I had typed my entire password, which is a total of 6 characters. When it finally finished, I hit enter as usual, and then it just froze... It continued to show the characters of my password there, but I could no longer move the mouse or type anything, and I tried waiting but nothing, even after 20 minutes... So, now I am in safe mode with networking typing this, and I was wondering if anyone else has experience this and knows hwo to fix it, or just out-right knows how to fix it... any info would be great, thanks!

So my microsoft word 2007 seems to be locked. I was trying to finish a paper I was writing earlier in the week and now it won't let me add or change anything... not even type. I tried restarting my computer, but still no luck. I opened a new document and this is what it says: "this modification is not allowed because the selection is locked." I have windos vista (if that means anything). I have no idea how to fix this. Any ideas? Thanks.

When typing a document and I want to change the style, size, or color of the fonts, it changes back to what it was originally on before beginning the document and it takes numerous tries before it will set to my changes. Could I be doing something wrong, or is there information I am not aware of that I should do before clicking the changes.

Since I've updated my anti spyware, it has been finding several traces of morpheus applications. I haven't used morpheus in a long time, and have removed the program. Today, I noticed it still had some program files on my computer, and I haven't ran a scan yet. Do you think that should have fixed it? Or do I need to look further/clean deeper into my PC?

My computer has been acting funny lately. Sometimes I will get one pop up and even if I am not on a site, maybe like 3 times a week. Then once in awhile my cd-rom tray just opens on its own, sometimes it sounds like its going to open and the light goes on but it doesnt open. Sometimes my computer will freeze for a few seconds for no reason even if I am not on a site. I did a scan with AVG, Mcafee, Antivir, and nothing. I also scanned in safe mode and turn off system restore and nothing. I had something almost similar once and it was a trojan, found it, and deleted it and move on.
Do you think I have a trojan or something else? If I do what can I do to get it out bc the scans are not working.

I plan on surfing, do some video editing, and photoshop. Do I need the Macbook pro to handle these tasks or wqill the regular Macbook handle it?
