So my microsoft word 2007 seems to be locked. I was trying to finish a paper I was writing earlier in the week and now it won't let me add or change anything... not even type. I tried restarting my computer, but still no luck. I opened a new document and this is what it says: "this modification is not allowed because the selection is locked." I have windos vista (if that means anything). I have no idea how to fix this. Any ideas? Thanks.

It is not a trial version. But it was where all I had to do what type in my code, b/c the computer came with it.

If you have a legal version, call Microsoft tech support.

If not, you are beat.

Word 2007 is only available on Vista.... now for the issue ...
The message it's giving you isn't an error per se ... it's telling you literally what it says ... that the document is locked. I would normally say that you would have to do this by choice, because it's not that easy to do (it's not hard at all it's just not something that is made easy to prevent it happening by accident) ... but Vista is one of the worst OS releases ever to be conceived, and from what little I've dealt with it (because I avoid it like the plague) I wouldn't be surprised if it locked your file for you ... either way ... there should be a way for you to unlock it in the document properties (don't know exactly where because of the aforementioned vista avoidance, but it's there somewhere)

If you see this message at the bottom of the application window when you try to modify a document: "This modification is not allowed because the document is locked," the document is protected with an editing restriction of No changes (Read only) or Comments in Word 2003 (or a restriction of Comments in Word 2002 and Word 2000). The document author used the Protect Document features to restrict editing. Menu commands also might be unavailable, depending on the permissions that were granted to you by the document author.

Note When you open a document that is protected by Information Rights Management (IRM) in Word 2003, you might have permission to view the document but not to change it. When you open the document, the Shared Workspace task pane opens by default on the right side of the application window. In the task pane, click View My Permissions to see your permissions.

Once you opened it, you may copy it to another word file and rename it so you can edit it.

Word 2007 can save it as Word 2003. Something like "Save As" when you click on the icon in the upper left corner, Then look for Save in other formats. There will be a drop down with a list of different formats. Sorry it's not exact. I'm not at work and I have Office 2007 there, so this is from memory.
