When I open microsoft word this little icon show up and it stays there at the end of each sentance. It looks like a P but backwards.

It's not an Icon, it's a toggle, look for the same symbol on the task bar above and click on it ONCE.

Yes, this is used to let you know how many times you've used the Space Bar, Tab, Return/Enter keys and the qty. of spaces you have between sentences-great tool, if you like it.

Otherwise, the gentleman that responded also is correct, if...if you have the "P"-backwards, showing on your format or edit toolbar, you can click on it and it'll go away. If it does NOT show on one of these bars, you can go to "View-Toolbars-Standard" and you should see the backwards "P", better know as Hide/Show. If it's still not there, then you can click on a drop down arrow/triangle at the end of the Standard toolbar and click "Add/Remove", then when the list comes down, click on the Hide/Show toggle then click on it after it's loaded onto the toolbar and you're done!
