What is a firewall and what does it do? What's its purpose?

I've already started downloading it but it won't finish because It's telling me that my computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy and that I should make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. How do I do this?

I think it appears as a google tool bar, but i reset my internet and now I cant find it. Ive tried multiple programs, but they cant seem to find it and get rid of it. Where can i look, what can i do?

woman contacts me on myspace.
seems legit. doesnt have a link for me to follow, or ask for any personal info.
we exchange emails. she claims to own firearms, my page says i own firearms. she doesnt understand what i am saying about my firearms and when i asked what she owns, she changes the subject.

is there anything a scammer could gain by getting me to keep sending her emails? i thought as long as i didnt follow a link in the email or give any personal info, i was safe. am i correct ? is it safe to just email her ?

Ok, so I found this website called veoh.com where you can watch free videos. The only problem is you have to download it and I need to know if it's safe for you computer. Like, it won't send a virus into it or make it SUPER slow. Because I have already made that mistake with another website similar. Please tell me if it will do that to your computer and if you download it will it add things onto your computer. Easy 10 pts for the most informative answer!

I have had three emails from banks in the last two days saying they need to update my details , to be quite frank I am getting sick of filling in the forms the link takes me to. Why when banks update their software carn't they just take it on trust that none of your details change? I wouldnt care but I checked my nat west account this morning and they have screwed up the amount of money I'v got - £2000 down - can you believe that!

Please can you help me?? I was looking through my internet history when I came across cookies from porn sites. Then I checked the history on explorer and it lists about 5 different sites on there. When you click on them they show another few pages. I have asked my husband if he has been looking at porn and he says no, he wasn't even on the computer at that time. What gets me more than anything is that he is lying to me. Is there anyway these things could be on there with an innocent reason??

I`m running vista 32 bit with windows internet explorer. When i click "View"and then toolbars i have a toolbar that i do not want or do i know how it got there. It`s called "The emlkdo". Now this was not here yesterday i went in all files from yesterday and deleted them and it`s still there.NOw i can`t keep the toolbars i want to stay (yahoo,comcast) when i click view, toolbars,unlock toolbars and click yahoo, comcast they are there but, when i exit out of IE and click back in they are gone again.Since i deleted anything to do with "The emlkdvo" its there in toolbars to select and when i do nothing happens. I just want my yahoo,comcast toolbars to stay. What can i do? Also i do have norton 360 toolbar and it says fraud monitoring is on. And this desktop pc is only 3 months old i bought it brand new.

Every time I do a Yahoo search, links come up, but when I click on them, it redirects to some other site (adservices6.enhance.com) or some ebay crap. When I use other sites, like Google, it doesn't happen. Does anyone know what's wrong and/or how I can fix it?

I was told Norton was to much of a hog in my computer to run and I'm using Web root, but I just don't think it's giving me the protection. What are some good ones that wont cost an arm and a leg to get? Thanks

i got virus on my computer lately, since my previous anti-virus software activation had expired.To keep it active, i need to enter the product's serial number but i don't have it since that the product had already be installed in my computer from the first time my father bought it. i need to find a new product that is free,especially from hidden charge. my father doesn't want me to download any free software that i'd found on the net bcoz he afraid that the software might take other charges. until now i feel very annoyed with the virus,it kept switching off my comp automatically n all my folders got other similar additional folders (empty) that reappears after i delete it. should i buy a new software? hope somebody could give me some advice or way to solve this prob. 10q!

I need a good, free, anti-virus cleaner because something is wrong with my internet. My internet sends me end now, send or not send pop-ups whenever I close out. Once I close out it closes EVERY internet page I have up. I DID download firefox (friend recommended it) but I also want to get rid of the problem but I have no idea what it is. Could anyone give me any clues or send me sites that may have a problem to detect the problem, virus, whatever it may be? It'd be most helpful...thank you.

There are certain security issues Im having with my computer. The security is not allowing anything. I cannot install games from CDs without being loged in as an administrator. And the Administrator is currently too far away to use this computer. I was thinking of ending a few processes from internet security and my anti-virus program. However Im worried if I end these processes they will never start up again. and that could be really bad for my computer. What should I do?

I have a virus on my computer and I have tried everything to get it out. But to no avail. I have backed up all my important stuff and im thinkng about a full system restore. Will that get rid of the virus FOR SURE or will it still be there after I turn my computer back on?
