After using his computer for an hour or so (which is more random than at regular times), he encounters a clicking noise from inside his computer. This clicking noise is usually but not always followed by the Blue Screen of Death. Then he usually has to reboot and the problem goes away for a little while before it returns.

What we did: We opened the case and tried to find out where the clicking noises came from. They did not come from the fans since we saw them both operating normally. They seemed to be coming from the front of the computer where the disk reader and the CD Rom drive was, but we weren't sure. The clicking noise was usually followed by the screen freezing up, and then the BSOD. The BSOD message each time may have been different, but I'm not positive. We attempted to update his Windows and were at 24%, but the BSOD interrupted the update process (remember he has dialup so it was pretty slow)

My computer recently been away for maintenance. It's come back with none of my data on. I had a partition (two areas on hard drive), and they've put back some fragments from the partition that had none of my work on it.
They keep saying that my data partition didn't show up on the original image that they routinely take of the hard drive when the computers are taken into their workshop.
How is this possible, or are they just distancing themselves from the fact that they've made a huge error.

When I press the power button, my computer turns off after five seconds and restarts. There is no beep or monitor output, while my monitor used to turn on in 3 seconds.
It worked properly a day ago. It stopped working properly since I opened the computer but forgot to set the CPU fan properly and the CPU temperature reached 110C and it turned off immediately. I have and ASUS P5B and a core 2 duo 6300 processor and know someone whose computer worked for days at 95C temperature with the same motherboard and CPU!
Does turning on, restarting after a 5 seconds delay, and not bringing any screen at all mean the CPU is damaged? Don't forget that the computer doesn't beep too. So every part is ok except if the parts test has not begun yet. That means a burnt CPU or motherboard. There are no smells whatsoever. Does anyone know which part is damaged? Could the motherboard get damaged in that incident and could it detect burnt CPU? Could damage to either one cause any damage to other parts?

As far I know the Data stored in these two mediums would not lose when power is removed, is that right?

And ROM stored data in Cells while Hard disk stored data in form of disk, is that what makes them different?

Thanks a lot for your time.

I was thinking of upgrading the memory on my laptop with two slots, and I wanted to know if you could have 256MB + 512MB or 256MB + 1 GB or do they both need to be the same?

My main issue is cost, I figured it would be more economical to buy 1GB memory and install it with one of my existing 256MB instead of buying 2 x 512MB. I know little about upgrading computers so any input would be helpful.

I have an HP a350n desktop computer. I've had it for about 3, maybe 4 years now. Around a year ago when I got my video iPod, I was able to stick a DVD into the drive and put any dvd in Mp4 format and put it on my iPod. Or I could just watch a DVD on my desktop. What I'm getting at is.......My computer all of a sudden just stopped recognizing DVD's. It will still recognize/burn/play CD's, but when I insert a DVD, I see a little Disk Icon over my mouse like it's processing, but then it stops, the DVD doesn't show up in my computer.....I can't find it anywhere. The driver just isn't recognizing them for some reason. Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong or any way to fix it?

Help is greatly appreciated.

My IDE controller is listed under Unknown in my Device Manager.
Instead of my primary and secondary IDE channels being listed under IDE ATA/Atapi, they are listed under Unkown. They work, but being under Unknown seems odd to me.
I tried updating the chipset. I tried uninstalling the IDE controller in safe mode, i tried removing the Inf file, I removed the Intelide.sys from the registry. But it always finds the controllers again and puts them under Unknown. I even installed default Standard controllers but they again end up under Unkown.
This is a compaq with an Intel chipset 82801DB. I would update the BIOS, but its been customized by HP and this is not my computer.
Why do I care, well I think it is slowing my computer boot time and if its wrong, then maybe something else might go wrong. If they work and don't slow the computer down then fine, but how will I know.
Thanks, Fitz

Hi
I am a student, school of engineering and I was wondering if there is any device that is light, with high mobility and easy to be carried OTHER than tablet pc that can convert handwritten notes (that include math equations, circuit diagrams, block diagrams and graphs) to text.
I don't need a full features computer during lectures, I just need to convert handwritten notes to text, so I don't find it worthy to spend money on a tablet pc that I don't really need.
Any idea?
Thanks.

when I upgraded to windows xp, I had no problem with the video card and driver, but now starting new with a clean install, windows xp on it's own says, this driver wasn't designed for windows xp, and it won't install it.

what can I do to make it take the driver, I already know it works fine, it just won't take it.
