are windows 95, 98, xp considered belonging to same system type?

tried to install with bootable 98 and xp pro cds on old pc. no idea if it was 95 or 98 or anything before xp. monitor would say: pc not responding. not same system type.

They are not the same. Though I'm not really sure what you are getting at.

Windows 95 and 98 are largely compatible, but XP is based on a completely different core (stemming from Windows NT).

In addition to the OSes themselves being very different, they can also be using very different file systems. Win95/98 cannot read the XP NTFS filesystem, while XP CAN read the 95/98 FAT32 system.
