My computer recently been away for maintenance. It's come back with none of my data on. I had a partition (two areas on hard drive), and they've put back some fragments from the partition that had none of my work on it.
They keep saying that my data partition didn't show up on the original image that they routinely take of the hard drive when the computers are taken into their workshop.
How is this possible, or are they just distancing themselves from the fact that they've made a huge error.

download and run a free software called Recuva. You may be able to see if you can recover any of your missing data

It is possible to hide a partition so it won't show in my computer but in you case it wasn't hidden
If there wasn't anything wrong with the hard disk in the first place and it was just windows that was faulty they should have saved all your data before formatting.
as for the didn't show up on the original image that's a load of rubbish if they'd done an image of your hard drive it would have shown both partitions.
they're trying to blind you with science to cover their as you put it huge error

This sounds pretty routine to me. If your 'puter was messing up and you took it into some hardware techs who had kept an earlier image of your 'puter's hard drive, when it was working well enough to have sent it back to you, it is quite routine for the first matter of business for them to be to completely wipe your hard drive of any and all data and/or software, and then to reimage your hard drive like it was in their image. In the mind of the 'puter tech, that is one of the first lines of defense, is to verify first that it ISN'T a software-related error, which only takes time to restore, instead of replacing any hardware which will cost much more than just the time involved.

And it sounds to me from your description that it WAS a software-related problem, or it wouldn't now be working after only a reimaging.

So, to me, it sounds like the problem with your 'puter was something that wound up on your hard drive, and not that they'd made any kind of huge error.

The PROBLEM with techs who rely primarily upon reimaging hard drives, is that it not only destroys all the viruses, worms, and corrupt data and software files, but it also destroys any additional partitioning and makes you have to reinstall any programs and drivers you added to it since that original image was made.

That is why I always tell ALL of my clients to MAKE SURE they back up ALL of their data (if they can) before putting their 'puter into my hands, is that I know that I might wind up having to wipe out a lot of hard work, in order to get a system up and operational again.

i think they took the easy way out.
basically just formatted the drive and reinstalled some progs....having said that, a format should just clear your c: drive unless they specified another drive.
only other thing i can think of at this time of night is if they had the original restore disk, using this disk will normally set the whole comp to factory settings.
either way, if you did not tell them to keep data, they cannot be held responsible, few comp shops will accept liability on the grounds that they do what is needed to be done and the customer should follow good computer management and back up all needed data

Are you sure that you had two seperate partitions? that means that you would have had a C drive and a D drive, than E and F for CD and/or floppy.

If so than they proably formatted the entire harddrive wiping out all of your data. Did you give them permission to do a disk wipe if necessary, if so than there is nothing you can do about it. If not than you can ask them to attempt to retrieve the lost data from the drive or just be mad about it if they can not. Than honestly use your word of mouth network to warn others of their actions.

It depends, what was the problem with your laptop originally? if it was something to do with a boot problem or something, that they couldnt repair then they must have done a format, any way its really rare that some one in a professional computer related workshop couldnt recover a harddrive... so the chances are that they are covering it up....
