Laptops & Notebooks - December 2007

I am looking for a laptop which has 2048MB RAM, 160+GB HDD capacity and a nice processor.

It will be used to complete work, will require Wi-fi, 3+ USB ports, a long-lasting battery, should be lightweight and portable (easy to carry).

I refuse to buy a laptop from Dell.

I live in Canada and have spent 14 hours phone time trying to get HP to replace a warrantied TV Tuner Card . Every excuse in the book and 12 weeks later no card no calls no emails

i bought an hp laptop 2 and a half years ago w/warranty and it started acting up. About 6 months ago, i brought it in for overheating they sent it back with a broken hinge on the screen.
i had to bring it back 3 months later because it overheated again and the battery was dead and audio jack was loose.

they "fixed" it and sent it back w/o ever fixing the audio jack and it still overheats & now i have ghost images on the screen & the scroll pad freezes & instead of the screen lighting up when the power jack is plugged in, the screen dims.
i brought it in again and told the manager that the problem is not getting fixed and that the laptop smells like burnt glue and he told me i must not be using it on the right kind of surface. i told him i have a portable thing that holds the laptop and his response was for me to get a cooling pad, but the fans on he computer work fine. Now the computer will not boot up.
Am I wrong for asking for a new computer? It's only been sent in 2 times.

my laptop says vista compatible and i bought a windows vista home premium upgrade package. My laptop has a sticker that says vista compatible but i was wonder where out of 100 would it be for running good with the vista installed.
eg. 50/100 = minimum---- 100/100 recommended

The specs are:
intel celeron m410 cpu,
1.46ghz,
1gb ram,
128mb intel gma 950 graphics card,
15.4 inch screen,
wireless built in,
dvd-rw,
usb x3,
500mhz bus speed,

What mark out of a hundred (can be given in %) would it get as being recommended???

Ok... so my new i-Pod Classic ONLY works with the new itunes 7.5 which ONLY works with computers that have XP or Vista installed. I have a piece of you know what computer with all my MP3 files on it and you guessed it... Windows 2000, and since my i-Pod won't be recognized on the computer, that is pretty much useless to me. So now I want to transfer my MP3 files from that computer to my new XP equipped laptop. My IT dude says to get a memory stick and that should work... will it??? Can a memory stick transfer MP3 files easily from one computer to another? Help... please?

My laptop has been broken for awhile, since it won't take a charge from a wall-charger because the motherboard is loose. I'm curious if there is a way to hook up a laptop to another computer, to use it's power supply, because I want to back-up some files before I get it fixed.

It has to be small and light. I can pay around £500. I'd rather go to a shop and buy than going online cos I wanna feel it before I buy it. Do you have any model in mind and a place I can buy it in London?

All other things being equal(ish), does a higher hard drive capacity generally mean increased power consumption?

I'm looking at Hitachi notebook drives and want to maximize battery life. Does anyone have any power consumption information regarding the Hitachi 5K160 vs 5K250? Which drive (the 160GB or the 250GB) will give me the best battery life?

We bought a new laptop for our son 4 christmas.

I set it up a month ago. Pulled it out last night to install bt home hub broard band, but cany get passed the log-in page.

Its asking for a password. I presume i put one in when i set it up, but stupidly i cant remember it.

Can i somehow skip this or over-ride or start set up again??

All thats on the screen is my sons name with his logo picture, under that is asking for the password.
To the right of the screen is options for shutting down.

It's a little less than that, it's from Dell and it's currently $800 off for me. It would be fully decked out with everything I could possibly need including a 4 year warrenty, etc.

well i have a Comapq presario F579WM laptop and its great. she's running vista prenium and she's verry fast.
well i've been Noticing lately that the bottom of my laptop is unusualy hot and the fan dosen't kick in to cool it. She's brand new so i dout that something broke. I had her fan and everything cleaned and it still dosen't keep it cool.

the fan kicks in here and there and cools it but when it shuts off it reheats again
Can anyone help?

I just bought a Compaq Presario V3630TU windows XP notebook. I cant hibrenate or put it in standby. When ever i press the sleep button, a blue screen will appear with lots of words. Before i can read them, the notebook will restart. Can anyone help. I ask the shop which bought it, and they suggest me to format it, they indicate that is nothing to do with the sofware but the notebook itself. They also say if that dosent work, i have to bring it to the HP Compaq service center. But can anyone suggest any other solution.?

i keep getting small electric shocks from the sides and underneath of my laptop- there not very big and dont hurt much- is this normal? How can i stop it? Also ive noticed if i touch the radiator while on my laptop i get a bigger shock- like the kinda shock you get when you are static and touch someone to annoy them- is this normal or is there something wrong with my laptop? thanks for your answers in advance x
