These are discs I created myself when I first got the computer. How can I verify that they are not faulty? And if I just go for it will I screw up my computer? Thanks

If they work, the process should completly wipe your hard drive and you'll lose everything saved to the drive since you made the discs, but in the end you'll have a functional system again.

If it fails, yes, your system will be a pile of metal, glass and plastic. Your only alternative would be to get a set of discs from the mfr.

If it was me, I would buy an identical hard drive for the system and restore to that drive. If it works you have a backup drive. If it doesn't you're no worse off--but know that the backup is no good...

About the only way a DVD could be "faulty" is that your computer would not be able to read from them (or parts of them). If that were to happen, the process would stop and your computer would probably be only part way loaded and so might not boot up at all. Or if it is near the end, you may only be missing a couple data files.
