The hard drive won't connect directly to the laptop

To just get the files off, you need to connect the drive to a PC then connect the PC and laptop together - a network connection would be easiest. By sharing the drive you can then access it directly from the laptop.

another option is to connect it via a USB port. But you need an external drive enclosure for that. The advantage is that you can use it permanently on the laptop that way.

No, this is an antiquated POS.....carry out for a P4. I have been given my HP Pavillion ZX5000 Pentium 4 HT 3.2 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM for $350 used. and this is greater efficient than maximum i've got seen for in basic terms $500.
