Laptops & Notebooks - April 2007

I just bought a new laptop and it came pre-installed with windows vista, but vista is a memory hog and I was wondering how I can uninstall windows vista and install windows xp. I'm running on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 laptop if that helps.

In a nutshell, the C drive on my Toshiba laptop is full (there really is no more I can delete from it - it's the regular, very necessary anti-virus/anti-spyware updates that have filled it). But, I have an external hard drive of 250Gb attached to this pc with 213GB free, and so, I want to know what/how I can use that space to run my pc. In short, I want to try to set up that external drive as my MAIN drive, if possible.

Any advice folks please?

Would you recommend one? Were you pleased with your purchase? How long do you expect to keep it for? What would you say to someone transferring from a PC Laptop? Any other tips/info/suggestions etc? Is the iLife suite overated or is it fact that it is effiecient and usable?

I need some help picking out a laptop for college...I want a good value but I don't want something cheap. I need wireless internet, something pretty fast, a decent amount of memory, preferably a CD-RW drive and DVD drive, and good battery life. I'm going to major in computer science so I figure a good laptop will be pretty handy.

I was thinking about getting a Dell, but I thought I should ask around. If anyone has a specific model that would be great.

hi people! i just want to ask what dual core or dual processor is great for laptops?because there are centrino duo, pentium duo, turion x2, core 2, etc..i dont know which one is the best and the worst..and what is the highest clockspeed of dual processors in laptops?
and also, will a dual processor-ed laptop overheat and eat battery sooo fast? how can i prevent it? should i get a lower clockspeed so that it wont overheat?

I've got a 3year old Toshiba Satellite that has been virtually trouble free up til now.

The screen started flickering off and it seemed that if I moved the hinge, it would come back to life. This went on for a few days. I was about to pull it apart and check for loose connections until....

The other night the problem got worse and now during the reboot - just before the windows splash screen - the screen is filled with zeros.

When windows does come up, the resolution is screwy and by the time I can select a user and log in the monitor has gone blank and will not come back. If I boot in safemode, the monitor does not flicker, and everything seems to work ok. When itgets to the safemode boot menu, the strange zeros come back again but do not cover the screen. Instead, they and other odd characters appear in the menu options. One was: "Lqst Kn0wN Good c0nfiguration" or something like that... I know there was a q where the a should have been & 0's werein weird places too.

I bought a new laptop, TOSHIBA satellite A100. Whenever I boot, I always have to press and hold the F12 key. What should I do so that when I boot I won't have to press and hold the F12 key again? Thanks for the help.

I don't have the owners manual or anything that mite help me. My lap top (DELL Inspiron 1150) that belongs to my school keeps shutting off like 10 minutes after i turn it on; it only hapens when it's plugged in to an outlet with its rechrger. whe i turn it bak on it says: "the system automatically powered off to maintain system temperature requirements. the ait flow from the system fan vents may be obstructed. please comsult ur owners manual for proper maintanence and ensure that the system fan is clear of any dust or debris."

How do I fix it? how do i clear the dust or crap from the fan vents, and wher r the fan vents? Just please help me i kno nothing about computers.

Note: this only happens to me everyone else using the same laptop has no problems. We are running XP and the laptop is a Sony. Also the last thing I remember when the keyboard worked is I got a pop-up warning that I was holding down the caps lock key too long.

I have checked the control panel and volume controls are not muted and all on full volume. I have checked the devices and there is a sound card installed. There was sound but it just stopped.

Hi,

I have a Presario 2700 and when i boot up normally it crashed when i choose which account i wish to log it on. It is not a heat problem because it works perfectly in safe mode. I backup everything that i wished to keep and deleted the partition and went to install windows xp pro but when there is about 30 minutes left of installtion, it totally shuts down. It is not the battery as i charged that up to full. Please help.

I can put MOST dvds into the laptops dvd drive, but i recently bought a copy of Borat that would not work, the dvd drive would make all of these strange noises like it was jammed, and it would not read the disc. After that I put in another dvd and it worked just fine. But Borat will still not work.
