I need some help picking out a laptop for college...I want a good value but I don't want something cheap. I need wireless internet, something pretty fast, a decent amount of memory, preferably a CD-RW drive and DVD drive, and good battery life. I'm going to major in computer science so I figure a good laptop will be pretty handy.

I was thinking about getting a Dell, but I thought I should ask around. If anyone has a specific model that would be great.

The dell 1505 is a great laptop for college students. You can customize it to have the options you mentioned and can get $300 off $1000 with a coupon from http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good luck.

I am an IT Professional and have been for quite some time. Our company purchases Dell all the time and they are cheap and flimsy and tend to not last. Especially the connection point between the monitor and keyboard, becomes very loose over time of opening and closing. For the money, Gateway has worked out considerably better. You can get more for less and it stands up to the test of time. I use my laptop as my main computer at work and at home, greatest CPU I have ever used.

I can't give you a specific model, but don't limit yourself to a dell. When you look around, look to see what the best processor, and hard drive you can get for your money. If you want add in a DVD-Combo which plays DVD's and can burn/write regular CD's. The memory and the wireless feature are cheaper for you to upgrade and get exactly what you want from www.newegg.com . Look in pcmall.com, zipzoomfly.com, and tigerdirect.com along with Dell and then look for the BEST CPU processor and hard drive the want period. Good luck

MacBook or MacBookPro

They do wireless networking, are of decent speed (although, frankly, it is hard to buy something that isn't these days), have decent memory, usually come with a DVD burner, have good battery life (and excellent sleep mode / wake speed).

Since they are UNIX based you can easily get lots of programming environments (IIRC they come with Perl, Python and PHP out of the box, and you can easily install Java and C compilers (among others). They also come with SSH and various server software (such as Apache).

Dell works the best for me but MAC books are also a good choice!

I use HP Pavilion. It is a bit expensive but it is really worth it. It has wireless internet and around 90 gigabytes of space. It is also shiny and lovely. I promise you, you won't regret it!
