CDs still work fine, but my computer doesn't read DVDs and then freezes whenever I just try to play a movie. I've tried different disks, I've cleaned the lens and drive, and nothing seems to work.
Also, once my computer freezes, I can't even turn it off. Everything becomes frozen, and I have to pull the plug out of the wall just to be able to reboot.
This problem seems to have come out of the blue - everything was working fine recently. I changed a Firewire card to a USB 2.0 card, and just bought a new 20" widescreen monitor. I don't believe either of these should have an effect on the DVD drive, but what do I know. I haven't used the DVD drive in a few weeks so I can't say for sure that it stopped working before or after either of these changes.
I have a Dell Dimension 8200, using Windows XP Pro.
