Er, what operating system do you have?
If you're using Win9x, then might have to re-install your USB drivers.
If you have XP, then Windows can automatically recognise USB flash storage devices, like your camera, jump drives, .mp3 flash devices, etc.
When you plug in a USB storage flash device, Windows checks what was plugged in, and then it searches the registry to see if there is any specific action it should take when that device is plugged in. If there wasn't any installed software for the device, Windows will pop up a message which asks you what you want to do whenever that same device is plugged in. This kind of action is called AutoPlay. It is similar to the Auto Run feature for CDs when you insert a CD into a CDROM drive.
When you installed your camera software, it should have told Windows what action it should take when you plug in your camera. Usually, Windows will be set to run some kind of photo program for cameras. If your iPod came with some software that you installed, then that program should have been set to run as well.
Try un-installing and re-installing your camera's and ipod's software. It looks like some of it's files or the registry settings for them have been damaged.
If your ipod didn't come with any software, you can see if it is being recognised by double clicking the My Computer icon on your desktop.
You should see an icon for it. If you double click it, the Explorer window should appear.

If your computer hangs or reboots while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yk5zpr
