CDs still work fine, but my computer doesn't read DVDs and then freezes whenever I just try to play a movie. I've tried different disks, I've cleaned the lens and drive, and nothing seems to work.

Also, once my computer freezes, I can't even turn it off. Everything becomes frozen, and I have to pull the plug out of the wall just to be able to reboot.

This problem seems to have come out of the blue - everything was working fine recently. I changed a Firewire card to a USB 2.0 card, and just bought a new 20" widescreen monitor. I don't believe either of these should have an effect on the DVD drive, but what do I know. I haven't used the DVD drive in a few weeks so I can't say for sure that it stopped working before or after either of these changes.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, using Windows XP Pro.

As a test, I would try to open the DVD to view it's contents and see if you can even copy the data off to your computer. It could be a bad disc too. Try another disc.

remove the usb card to see if this resolves issue. If it fixes it, go the usb card manufactuer for assistance.

I wouldn't shut off the computer by pulling the power from wall. If you hold down on the power button for five seconds, it should turn off. Have you tried hitting alt+ctrl+del and then clicking on task manager to end task?

Er..my opinion is that those CDs are scratched! i'm quite particular that cds and dvds artwork the right comparable way, and for that reason, are study the comparable way. So!, if so, there might could be some thing incorrect with the CD/CDs which you have tried, and so attempt yet another in step with risk. notwithstanding, and it is in simple terms going out on a whim, insert the CD. Restart. flow into the bios settings. Make it boot off of your disk force. it may say some thing like disk no longer got here across, after which you comprehend which you computing device has themes, and in step with risk you may get somebody to look at it. notwithstanding, if it quite works, it may in simple terms boot generally by way of fact it detected no longer something became on the cd, for that reason to decision 2, boot off disk. this would possibly not artwork by way of fact idk if it's going to enable you comprehend that there isn't any disc, and it may desire to do the comparable element. sturdy good fortune!
