If a PSU says that its wattage is 500W, does it mean that it will consome the whole 500W even if the total consumption of your computer is just 350W?

Or the 500W means that the maximum output is 500W?

I have a fairly low powered Acer Laptop - Travelmate 2414WLMi using a Celeron m processor 380/40Gb Hard drive and 256DDR2. I have fast Broadband.
This was used by my daughter initially but is now being put to general use - no gaming/downloading etc. Mainly used for internet trawling.
I have cleaned up the system by using defrag etc (yes I know its not perfect) so there is nothing to stop the machine working at a "reasonable" speed. However it is very slow and when I checked, AVG was using from 15% - 50%+ of processor power.
This doesn't appear right so has anyone any ideas as to how to speed this up.
Oh - there were a number of Microsoft updates waiting after activating it after a few months and a few "failed" for no apparent reason. One was Net.1 which means nothing to me. Could this have caused a problem?

I'm kinda new to all this stuff and really don't know what the difference is. What is the difference between quad core and dual core processors?
I want to play big games like crysis and UT3.
I also run programs like adobe flash and photoshop.
Which one would suit me for these kind of things?

This may sound a saft question but am asking anyway!

I have a laptop computer use it most days/nights for a few hours but i now have the feeling its burning the top of my legs slightly especially if run off the mains adaptor.

The underside of the computer can get quite warm after a while.

Anybody else had the same problem?

I was thinking of getting a lesser computer, such as, an Aser Aspire or something, and i was going to put a XFX PVT84JUDF3 GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card into it, will this work? Will that kind of computer support it?

Hi I have recently ran a test on my computer that indicated that I have 2 sticks of 512 mb meaning the ram on my computer must be 1024 mb right? Bull****. I go to check on properties on my computer and it says 768 mb. What is the problem here? I tried to put the sticks in again but it's the same. Please help me.

My laptop is about a year and a half old, and recently everytime it runs on battery power, it drains very quickly. For example, I had it on battery for about 15 minutes and looked at the remaining life..it said something like 30 minutes, 70%. It has never been such a short life like that! Why is it happening?

Ok, yesterday, I was at a computer store, and the most powerful computer there just happened to have crysis installed (I wonder why)
Long story short, I am still in shock with the DX-10 realism.

HOWEVER, at home, I can barely run the demo on low settings. What should I upgrade next in terms of computer gaming?

WE bought extra memory for our computer, and it was running super fast. Then my sister installed a program for her online class, and it was running soooooo slow. After she was done with the course, i uninstalled the program and the computer never picked up the speen again, if anything it is slower. I defraged, deleted temp files and the recycle bin. I tried everything. Why is the memory not recovered??

Around two days ago my brother was restarting the computer and he ended up pressing some buttons that led him to reboot the computer (or something similar) and it asked him if he wanted to keep all files and he said yes. But then it turned out that when the computer started all files and programs were no longer there, the computer was like the day we first bought it (with no files and the programs we had were gone).
We have a 2004 HP Pavilion computer with Windows XP. Is it possible for me to recover all the files I had saved prior to my brother doing this?? and if so, how can I go about doing it??

whether it is company service technician/engineer,or an authorised service engineer, or a freelancer,all of them insist that laptop be left with them (for testing or so they say),when it comes to desktop it is serviced on site. Isn’t this procedure faulty? causing a breach in security? OR is this just a hogwash to impress the client and fleece?

k, we got this wide screen monitor for our computer but when i plug it in everything is stretched and it looks terrible! When you play full screen movies on it, they take up the entire screen, wide screen movies play in a little strip on the screen. is there anyway to tell the computer that it's a wide screen monitor? perhaps a free program i can download?
