I go to graduate school and all i really need is something to process my work. Is this a good deal or not? Anyone know what the other competitors are offering or know of a better deal?

The $499 Inspiron only offers a single core processor, 512MB RAM, a 60GB HD, and a CDRW/DVD ROM drive. For $100-$200 more, you can get a dual core CPU, 1GB RAM, a bigger hard drive, and a DVD burner from most manufacturers, including Dell. The low end model isn't worth it.

Dell offers the Vostro for $499 with a dual core AMD Athlon X2, 1 gig memory and and 120 gig hard drive...I picked up this same package about a month ago when they ran a special for $399, and I'm very pleased with it. Its definitely not a gaming system, but it gets the job done for me and then some. If I'd change anything, I'd probably go with more memory.

It is possibly a good deal depending on the amount of memory. If you have Windows Vista Premium, you need atleast 2 gb of ram and a 160 gb hard drive because the running program uses atleast 1 gb just to run. Also, the power adapter comes loose a lot easier with an AMD and it costs just as much to fix it as buying a new laptop because you have to replace the motherboard. The Intel systems are more expensive now but are less expensive in the long run because when it comes loose you don't have to replace the motherboard. I hope this helps!

If you are just going to get the laptop just for working on school work and nothing else then make sure there is at least 50g of hard drive space and i would say over 1.5GHz for the processor and that is only for school work anything else wouldnt work real well

You might find something cheaper but not quality wise. Dell Computers are the best period.
