Around two days ago my brother was restarting the computer and he ended up pressing some buttons that led him to reboot the computer (or something similar) and it asked him if he wanted to keep all files and he said yes. But then it turned out that when the computer started all files and programs were no longer there, the computer was like the day we first bought it (with no files and the programs we had were gone).
We have a 2004 HP Pavilion computer with Windows XP. Is it possible for me to recover all the files I had saved prior to my brother doing this?? and if so, how can I go about doing it??

Ok I Know Exactly What Happened Your Brother Must Have Re Boot The Computer And Then Did System Restore System Restore Is A Program That Comes Installed On Some Computers Where It Completely Wipes Your Hard Drives Clean
Just Like When You First Bought It The Program Is Used To Restore Your Computer To Factory Settings So Say You Get a Virus Or Anything That Messes Up Your Computer The System Restore Fixes Your Computer By Taking It Back In Time Before Something Bad Happened To It Ask Your Brother If He Pushed The F10 Button On The Keyboard While It Was Re Booting If So Then He Did System Restore And For That All The Information That You Lost Is Gone Im Sorry You Have To Re Install All The Programs You Lost And Put All The Information You Lost Back In Yourself It Looks Like He Restored Your Computer To Its Factory Settings Im Sorry

If you're using HP pavillion, then you may be in luck. Try to use the recovery software provided when you bought your notebook. As long as you did not format you hard drive, it's there.

Another possible cause is that it's being stored under another user account. Try to look for it under the Document and Setting directory.

Not exactly sure what you did. Either you deleted your files or you restored your PC. If you did the latter, the odds are not good. If you deleted your files, they may be in the recycle bin. Otherwise, you can try to recover them, but chances are not good especially after 2 days.

Not the best but free :)

This situation happened to me. I took the tower to a PC repair place. They were able to recover all of the My Documents for the Administrator's Profile (but not the other three profiles).
