whether it is company service technician/engineer,or an authorised service engineer, or a freelancer, all of them insist that laptop be left with them (for testing or so they say),when it comes to desktop it is serviced on site. Isn’t this procedure faulty? causing a breach in security? OR is this just a hogwash to impress the client and fleece?

To open a desktop, all u do is remove two screws and remove the side panel, and u can see the entire inside of a computer. However for a laptop, its different. No two laptops are same. Each laptop is opened in a different way. Moreover while opening the same, it has to be opened carefully as there are a lot of press locks which have to be released. Every laptop is like a new experience. Even if the problem is known; to get to that particular part, it would take two to three hours. Moreover a lot of care has to be taken to ensure that there are no scratches or damages to thebody. hence invariably for any hardware problems, u would be required to leave the laptop in the service centre for a day or two.

Well, it depends on their business. Laptops, if it is a possible hardware issue, are far more difficult to work on. You need a much more stable and sterile environment to open up a laptop then on some guys kitchen table next to the bag of chips.

Desktops can be worked on on site, but if they have a repair shop, and you take the desktop TO THEM, most likely they will need ANY computer (desktop or laptop) for a day or two.

On top of that, It is usually first come first serve, so they may not get to yours for a while, and two, you never know how LONG it will take to troubleshoot and issue and get parts in.

I am a computer technician. It takes me a minute to take a part a computer, 20 seconds if I want to do it at an unsafe speed. It takes me at least an hour to take apart a laptop that I am FAMILIAR with already. Like someone has said, every laptop is a different experience. Its not that tough to take it apart, its the putting it together that is tricky!

Don't sound quite right. We do warranty work for Dell, Gateway, HP/Compaq, IBM and all work is done on site. The only time the unit leaves the client site is if we can't fix it and it goes back to the service depot and within 10 working days it's back or replaced.

It's not required, if you can fix problem yourself. Have never taken a lap top or desk top in that I could wait on to be repaired. The factory or authorized service center has many customers ahead of you when you go in so you have to wait your turn. They are not interested in your private information only repairing your computer.
Hope this helps
