I have a fairly low powered Acer Laptop - Travelmate 2414WLMi using a Celeron m processor 380/40Gb Hard drive and 256DDR2. I have fast Broadband.
This was used by my daughter initially but is now being put to general use - no gaming/downloading etc. Mainly used for internet trawling.
I have cleaned up the system by using defrag etc (yes I know its not perfect) so there is nothing to stop the machine working at a "reasonable" speed. However it is very slow and when I checked, AVG was using from 15% - 50%+ of processor power.
This doesn't appear right so has anyone any ideas as to how to speed this up.
Oh - there were a number of Microsoft updates waiting after activating it after a few months and a few "failed" for no apparent reason. One was Net.1 which means nothing to me. Could this have caused a problem?

AVG should only be using substantial cpu resource briefly when updating. System idle process should be at 97 to 98% level when you are not doing anything. If there are non system processes that keep the cpu busy, try ending them. If they are unnecessary, you can disable them through msconfig.
