My laptop is about a year and a half old, and recently everytime it runs on battery power, it drains very quickly. For example, I had it on battery for about 15 minutes and looked at the remaining life..it said something like 30 minutes, 70%. It has never been such a short life like that! Why is it happening?

Hun , try to purchase a real working cooler, this is some external part and could easily be consumed from any computer shop, i had the same problem.
(After sometime on something flat your laptop's heating ratio is getting more and more , and the FAN is trying harder to cool the parts , and the second reason is batteries are also known with their weakness to the hotness.)

There are a few possibilities that could be causing your problem. It could be a defective battery. Meaning that one or more of the cells in the battery could be weak or have worn out prematurely. So if under warranty make a claim. The other reason that could cause this is if you leave your laptop plugged in all the time even when the battery is fully charged that will prematurely kill a battery too, because the charging doesn't really stop when it's full it just slows down. So your still pushing a charge into a full battery and that will shorten the life span of it. This applies to ALL rechargeable batteries. Cells phones, ipods and all. Hope that helps.

1) you battery is dying. When you replace it get one with the most cell available for your laptop. Most laptops come with a cheap 4 cell or 6 cell battery. The more cells, the longer the life.
2) Go into the power options in the control panel and make sure laptop is selected. If is is set for desktop, you will drain the power faster.

If you leave your computer on all the time it slowly drains the live of the battery. batteries do not last forever. When I was in college I left my battery on all the time and I had to replace it about year and half in. Now the battery I have is not on all the time and it has lasted a lot longer. I hope this helps.

some battery life isnt long lasting...for example, i had a laptop for 2 yrs and after awhile the battery life would only be full for 30 mins then it would die...some reasons being, when u are using the laptop with ur charger plugged in, take out of battery and just leave the charger it to it runs directly off the main. it really saves the battery life. think you should purchase a new battery for your laptop.

It could be a couple different things with the computer. My laptop for instance can't keep a charged battery and will only run while a power cord is attached to it. It's not even a year old and it's doing this. So I found out that since i never let my battery run down low and all out of juice it now thinks that it's never fully charged. So if your battery is like mine is then I would do one of two things.
1) Take it to a local store and see if your battery needs reprogramming
2) Replace the battery.
Good luck to you!

the nicad batteries in laptops, like any other piece of them, have a percentage chance to just be bad. if you used to get much more life out of the battery and *are not* using any more peripherals than you used to (ie no use mouse/keyboard, no wifi external adapter, etc .. ie using a cabled usb mouse on a laptop with a '4 hour battery life' will kill the laptop in about 2hr), see if you can get a new one from your vendor. typical basic hardware warranty on new stuff is 3 years .. if you got the laptop refurbished or second-hand, that's something else.

you may have a 3 cell battery which isn't very long lasting also you have you power settings set to high i suggest you buy a 9 cell batter which is compatible with your laptop
To change your power settings:
start > control panel > power options > power scheme (tab) > now change your power setting to maximum battery > apply and ok
you may a decrease in system performance that only due to your power settings

Same with mine. Always had 2 hours, then suddenly it won't last more than a minute. Is it a Dell? Mine is. I think our batteries are just shot... so expensive to get a new one though!

If you leave it plugged in, charging for too long after its already fully charged i.e-overnight, that wears down the battery alot, same with cell phones! a year and a half is really good tho, its probably just getting old, if it bugs you alot, just get a new one.
