Hardware - September 2007

while playing need for speed: carbon, the game just shuts down randomly. i can believe that its a performance issue: i just bought a new comp with a 3ghz pentium d dual core cpu, 1gb pc5400 ram, 200gb hdd, and a nvidia 8400 256mb gpu.
i saw somewhere in the control panel on my comp that i only have 550mb free. is the game taking more than 550mb to run, and thats why its shutting down? i do run the game settings on high detail.

i know it cant be from the cpu overheating. i have a thermaltake big typhoon (i MASSIVE cpu heatsink!) installed hat keeps it pretty cool (about 45c under load, i think).

what else could be causing the problem? i ordered another gig of ram, will that solve the problem?

I'm wondering what other graphics card relates to the NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200-256MB AGP. Can anyone tell me which radeon card compares closely to it? I'm also wondering what games can run on high with this, can you please tell me one high quality game like CSS or Battlefield 2142 that can be ran on high with no problems? Also, can someone show me the order in which this card is at, for example, 8800, 7600, etc, but can you show me in Radeon not in Nvidia? What I mean by that is like Radeon x300 being close to Nvidia 5500 or something. And add on the fact that it's ran on a 1gb ram. I don't want random answers about it being bad. Thanks.

I am currently running dual monitors (2) .Gateway installed card is 128MB. Can the added card exceed this or does it need to match or be lower than this ram.The second card is 16mb. on board ram and while it functions not all 3d graphics menus and options work off the added monitor.

i have a coolsat 5000 platnium. when im watching it it will play fine for a minute or so, sometimes play for 20 minutes then all the sudden it will start buzzing then turn off and come back on with out me touch anything. i have tried to changed satillites but it the same case. any recommendations?

I have a IBM ThinkPad - R61; I wonder if the Apple Airport would work with this computer? If I do buy an airport - it will allow me to connect to the internet? Most importantly, I want to use it to send music to a stereo system via Itunes... This is all possible? What Airport would you recommend? I am a college student and I want to get my first ever computer! Please don't laugh...

My mom had a computer from 1997, but it finally commited suicide by blowing up.

I have a budget of 650$, that is slightly flexible, but not by much.

I do not care about graphics or gaming or sound quality or if I can burn cd's, watch dvd's or anything like that. I do want wifi capability.

Basically, I need a reliable computer I can do my schoolwork on. Please help me! If you have a positive experience with a certain brand, or a negative experience, please dish! I have a really good friend to help me out, but I want to know what ya'll have to say!

I wont an IBM ThinkPad T30 in a work auction. It came with a docking station, a broken LCD and recovery disks. My thought was to use it as a desktop by hooking my existing monitor, mouse and keyboard to the docking station. When I plug in the monitor it doesn't recognize the computer (and vice versa). I'm not sure if this has to do with the fact that there is no operating system on it. How can I get the monitor to work on this laptop. It boots up and holds a charge just fine, but I can't move forward without being able to see what is happening.

Hi my friend has a laptop from Duracom. The computer boots fine and she is able to logon. However, once she logs on the only thing that is viewable from the screen is the desktop picture. The start button and the desktop icons are nowhere to be found. I was able to open task manager and explorer.exe is at 100%. Does she need to add more memory or is this virus related?

I have an emachines t5224 pc that had onboard video. It stopped working. I bought a new video card. My 945g mobo won't recognize the new card in the pci xpress16 slot since I can't get the BIOS screen to come up and change the preferences. I've tried resetting th CMOS and can't find a jumper (there isn't one i don't think) for this purpose. Is there ANY OTHER WAY possible? I'd rather not have to buy a whole new motherboard!
