Dells usually have their serial number and product number in the BIOS. To get into the bios, boot up the computer and hit the appropiate button to get into the BIOS. It should tell you on the screen. Usually F1, F2, or DEL.

There is a program called Rock XP that will show the number or you can always go to PC World with a mobile phone camera and pinch the number off a display laptop!

Mines not a laptop, but on my Dell Desktop, there's a folder called DELL ACCESSORIES, listed under "Programs".
My machines "Service Tag" and "Express Service Code" are shown there.

Dell use what they call a service tag number. As stated in a previous post you can find it in the BIOS. When you turn your machine on, hit F2 and you will enter the BIOS. Look for the service tag in there. It is normally alpha numeric and will look something like this:

No. If you are talking about the Windows XP Key code that comes on a sticker on the notebook, then you are out of luck. Each code gets registered with Microsoft, matched with a hardware key based on the current hardware when Windows is activated. Microsoft allows you to change the code 3 times, but you need to know what the old one is.

You can use the magical jelly bean keyfinder
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
I realize the name is kind of silly, but it's free and it will do the job you're asking.
