I am a college student and I want to get my first ever computer! Please don't laugh...

My mom had a computer from 1997, but it finally commited suicide by blowing up.

I have a budget of 650$, that is slightly flexible, but not by much.

I do not care about graphics or gaming or sound quality or if I can burn cd's, watch dvd's or anything like that. I do want wifi capability.

Basically, I need a reliable computer I can do my schoolwork on. Please help me! If you have a positive experience with a certain brand, or a negative experience, please dish! I have a really good friend to help me out, but I want to know what ya'll have to say!

Thanks!

Good answers so far, but please remember I am from the stone age and have no idea what any strings of letters and numbers mean! I know what a gigabyte is (my mp3 player is a 2 gig), and I know what measurements mean ( like the overall size and weight), and that's about it!:)

Watch the ads in your Sunday paper. Here, we have half-dozen computer stores with in-store weekend specials and very good deals around holiday time. Two months ago, at Office Depot, I picked up a Toshiba laptop for $399 (after rebates) and a free Canon printer. (I did get all my rebates.) I, too, do not do games, movies, etc. I am more into serious work. The laptop has an 80G HD, but only 512mb RAM. This week, it was on sale for $449 with 1gb RAM. It came with Vista installed. Unfortunately, Vista is so all encompassing it uses up a lot of memory. Because I usually run two or three programs simultaneously, I am currently in the process of getting an additional 512mb RAM.

These in-store deals are designed to get you to the store with the hope you will buy any additional needed supplies there. The number of items per store are limited, so you need to be at the store when it opens.

I have also had good experience with Dell and HP, but this was the best deal available at the time.

$650 will get you a respectable desktop pc, but not a very good laptop.
