Hardware - January 2007

I've just come back with a PC from USA and when I tried to power it up, it king of lit up, popped and then nothing came on. I understand that USA voltage is different but I had it on 230V which is the norm for UK. The PC was working fine in the U.S. What could be wrong?

im moving across country, and want to keep my computer, BUT my monitor is is huge I thought I'd just get a new one when i get to my destination, I wont lose anything off my desktop right ? Im gonna just take the tower and mouse....cool ??

Hi! I buy a small usb case for a 2.5" hdd to use as a backup! When i try to connect in a compaq e500 laptop (with XP) the device is instaled as a generic usb disk ( install also the USB to PCI dridge) but i can not access to im because it dosen't appers in my computer! This problem only occurs in my laptop because i test in others pc's and it works!

I have already taken the Hard Drive to a Data Recovery Place, and it was returned to me because the Platters were damaged! I am a photographer and had all 22 Weddings recovered for the exception of three.

The loss of zero Wedding is more than enough! But three is my most humiliating experience!

If companies can recover scratched CD ROM's there should be a way to recover scratched Platters?

Please don't answer if you will tell me that its impossible - I know that the likelihood is very slim. But am hoping that somebody knows.

Ok here's the scoop. I have researched and read and priced a new laptop to death. I have read all the reviews, tested the laptops in store, and asked tons of people. Here is what I have it narrowed down to, and help is appreciated.

Both systems are 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, plus larger Lithium-Ion battery instead of standard 6cell. CD/DVD drives, Wireless card, 14.1'' fancy screen, usual bells and whistles.

Dell is Intel® Core™ Duo T2050 (1.60GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB),
Total price with above listed features. 710$ plus tax.

HP is Mobile AMD Sempron(TM) 3500+ or the Athlon Mk 36
Total price with above listed features $720/ $740.

I only am using a new system for business travel, so mainly for music, DVDs and internet. I am not a gamer, and dont particularly care about the Vista upgrade. My main concerns are price and reliability.

I am also considering a refurb MacBook, with the 1.8gb Core Duo.
Its 799$

Thoughts, advice and opinions are most appreciated.

My LED monitor toppled over ,screen didnt break but it looks like you are looking thru a spiderweb.
Can this be fixed or should I just trash it and get a new one?

Ok so I'm looking into buying a new graphics card for my computer, mainly because I need a new one that is going to be compatible with Sims 2 (My current graphics card isn't supported.) and I need to know the following:
A. Need to know how to find out if a graphics card is going to be compatible with my computer.
B. What graphics card (I've been looking at a GeForce FX5200 on my local pc stores website for the past couple of days and it is a supported one) that is a supported card, would be good for playing sims 2.
Ok so I only need to know that one thing...

If its going to help, I have a PowerSpec 8921(I got it as a gift from my dad so I didn't buy it.)
I know enough about my computer, but something like a graphics card is a little new to me, but I'm learning.

I do not know why I confront a difficult .when I switch on the
computer. Sometime just heard a beep and no response which
involve the monitor but if i do it in second time. All will back to normal. Generally I press the buttom second and several time to
switch on. What is the reason for that is it the button is lossing.

It was given to me by a friend who can't remember the password. it's windows 2000 version and a dell laptop but that's all i know. I've tried F2 on start up but don't really know what i'm dealing with. Does anyone know what i can do, or where i can ask for help? thank-you

I am really a novice pc user, so I can use all the advice anybody is willing to share with me. They are both hp deskjet printers. The new one has a scanner and copier etc. So Do You Delete all the old printers info, before installing the new one, or can I just go ahead and install this one. With no conflict of interest.

Well, i need to drive an evaluation board consisting of Atmel's ATMEGA8L microcontroller. This evaluation board is driven from a computer through usb port and serial port, both. For that i have a usb connector (that connects through computer and my circuit) and a serial port (that connects through the serial port of the computer and the circuit) present at the back side of the PC's usually. In my PC, there is no serial port.. I have checked back side of the PC and on the motherboard also. So please help me out if there is any alternative or any other port, that functions same way as the serial port functions.. Please help me out, i need to complete my project as soon as possible. I have the alternative to put PCI slot inside the motherboard bt that costs around Rs. 800/-. So i have post this question here just to find if there is any other alternative, rather putting that PCI slot inside the motherboard.
