It is a 10/100 or other insertable card that you insert into the pc slot on your laptop after downloading or installing the wireless network drivers or other necessary software that allows you to connect to an existing network via router or if your laptop has compatible hardware/software capabilities to other existing networks within range of the signal. You will most likely have to have access to a router in order to have access to the network connectability signal. It is not difficult to install and configure as long as you have all the necessary software to install or have access to the manufacturer site to download the drivers. Hope this helps.

it allows you to go on the internet without connecting to a line. but if it is new it may not need one because some are built in
