you could try searching for the drives firmware and reflashing that. Recent DVD rewriters can do this within windows but lder ones need you to boot from a floppy to do this.
It is also possible that the drive is knackered and you'd need a new one. they don't cost a lot these days thank god

try doing extra Microsoft updates and looking on line for your dvdrw model for updates, but in my experience you might just need a new 1 as they don't tend to have very long life spans, specially when you copy alot.

usualy it is a hardware problem....
the lens might be scracthed if you used a cleaner, my advice is to go with the dvd-rw unit to a service in order to be fixed....
