i have used the download cd and got to the stage where you had to connect to internet...the picture of the internet cable was different to the one i was using - instead of a usb input it looked like a telephone plug, so i bought what i thought was the right one (ethernet cable) and used that to connect my modem instead, (as per the picture on the disc), but when i use this i cant even connect to the internet. what am i doing wrong?

I just got cable/internet and we got a modem that was connected to my roommates computer. I have a wireless router that i had from my old house. I hooked it up earlier and everything worked great. then my roommate turned off the power strip where the modem and wireless were plugged into. now after turning it back on, the router isn't working. My laptop gets an excellent signal but it won't connect. it just keeps "acquiring network address". anyone know how to fix this? and if you could also explain how to hook it up because i'm not sure if its hooked up right.

also, i've tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in, restarting computers and so on. thank so much

I live in an apartment with free WiFi. But I barely get one bar if any. And even with such a low connection, I am getting high speeds. However, I would like to know if someone can recommend a high range receiver or some kind of signal booster so that I can assure a more stable connection with more bars? Also, if I am connected to the network (or any public network), with all file sharing and network discovery off (using Vista), is my cpu safe from intrusion and other hacks???

I have a older laptop with a wireless card slot. If I put a wireless n speed card in, will my computer accept that speed or is the computer to outdated? Secondly, does the the wireless card and the wireless router have to be the same brand? If they work off of 802.11n, shouldn't it not matter if I use two different brand products?

I'm not a computer geek so bear with me pls. Now my ethernet cable trailing along my floor to my laptop is 100mbps but my belkin wireless router(which throws 200ft apparently) gives 54mbps is my cable twice as good. I use the cable and sell internet to my friends in our house. Although the signal is so poor when i try and connect with my £1300 sony vaio(1 out 4 bars) that utube won't come on at all and yahoo answers turns pages slow, but my mate seems happy and his laptop has got 192mb ram and is cheap, has any one else had problems with sony wireless ? oh the sony picks up wireless great when i'm next to it.

The hardware set up seems all 100%. The modem is a Motorola Cable Modem that works perfectly well when connected directly to a PC.
The initial set up [using 192.168.0.1] seems fine - it is a PPPoE connection requiring a full user ID and password. I am advised by the ISP that the firewall should be able to acquire automatically the IP address and DNS Servers. The connection has TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networks installed and running.
Yet in spite of all this I still 'time out' when running the 'TEST' from 192.168.0.1. Has anyone any ideas please ?
Just a thought - although FSV318 supposedly is able to cope with either straight-through or crossover cables, what should I be using for Modem to Router, and PC to Router ?
