If I could use a subnet to open a home based business

My bad. It should have said this. Are there any cases in which an organization could use nothing BUT a single subnet and when might this be necessary

need more info, what kind of business? You use a subnet to create a network of nodes or PCs. if your business needs multiple nodes or PCs then yes

Why would you wish to do this?

Do you wish to segregate personal vs business?

Separate subnets is one way to do this. VLAN assigment is another way.

You did not ask how so I won't go into that as I presume you know that.

Sometimes you may share printers in both personal and business and may find the segregation an inconvenience.
