First get a provider broadband is the best choice

Second - buy a router -circut city , staples, best buy

Third - decide weather you want wire less or will be connecting using The RJ45 wire with connection to router and computer.
The attuneation of RJ45 cable is 50 feet if you need a cable longer than 50ft then you will need a repeater.
Reminder some laptops will connet automatically nothing needed. If you want wireless then you must buy a bluetooth adapter which plugs into a ubs port/or a wireless card compatible with the router.

4) Disc usually need to be installed in the computers.

5) Hitch phone jack /broadband modem to the router using RJ45 wire.
Hitch Rj45 wire to computers from router to compters if choosing this option or bluetooth recievers to usb outlets
on computers.

Reminder make sure network is safe from hackers by making sure your firewall is on at all times. There is antivirus software for the home user whis free at avast.com.

If you run into any snags or problems call tech which is offered by your provider.

Not sure why you think there are 5 unless this is a homework question... Here are a few...

If you have broadband, use a router with a firewall built in and have it turned on or at a minimum have a good firewall on your PCs.

If you have wireless, always secure it with WEP or WPA at a minimum.

Always insure you have proper anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-SPAM/phishing software installed and it is always kept up to date.

Always password protect all computer accounts.

A PC needs 3 types of protection. Anti Virus, Anti Spyware, Firewall.
There is a guide on my PC help site on; What you need, Why you need it, Where to get it.
All are free.
