Computers & Internet - 20 August 2006

The office that I work at has three computers. One of which I had encountered a spyware/adware infection last night. So far, on every computer, I having problems loading pages. So far I can occasionally get yahoo on the more troubling computer, but google or hotmail, or most other sites, forget about it. I've tried to check that whole LAN thing those "page not found" messages tells me I can do as an option, but I'm not sure what to look for. Help please?

Does such a thing even exist? I have Norton Internet Security 2005 and hate it! Sure, it's great at catching things and has lots of options, but it takes up almost all of my system resources! Granted, my processor isn't the newest version, but I've got 512 MB of RAM, and my cpu usage is constantly at 100%!!!

I love to play with XP... I have to be able to tweak my programs... I do love that about Norton. I'm always installing and trying new things (it's my make & break machine) so I always have things backed up. Repairing things is the best way to learn! I'm not a novice, but not an expert either, and know about msconfig and all of the basic stuff for system performance, so that isn't part of the problem!

My computer always works great after I dump the system and star over... UNTIL I install Norton, and it has 5 or 6 things constantly running and really bogs it down!

Thanks in advance for suggestions! Any more advanced tips on system management are welcome too!

Somebody gave me a used printer and I haven't been able to find any place to get help with getting it to work. It is connecting nicely with my PC, but the paper isn't feeding from where I think it should go. I also have a quickly flashing orange light. I'm uploading video from my camera, and can't even get the computer to recognize the cable. It may be a bad cable but maybe I need to do something different with video? When I have flash cards or any other device plugged into my laptop, it recognizeds the new hardware right away. I can't figure out what i'm doing wrong....and I still have to figure out then how to edit the video once i get it on my machine!

I read about microsofts "my private file", now withdrawn. It seemed like a useful feature. I managed to find a proper file of this and have saved it, before installing, to capture the installer as well. Can i just put this on my ntl web space for others to use, as is, or is there code needed like you see "download now" buttons on websites.

I must have deleted something or changed something? The bottom part of the screen, the Start icon and the task bar are back in that old grey look. Andy the Tool bar on the top of the screen is the same way. I would like to get the blue screen back on the bottom and the XP tool bar on top back. Thanks...

i sense that it is copyright infringement to down load music from limewire and therefore illegal.
in which case, why is it so accessable? i would think that the majority of users are doing so illegally...could somone explain, is everyone just pretending its ok when its not, why doesnt limewire get into trouble? Or, How can limewire be used legally?

I get a blue screen with white writing that says Windows has encountered a serious problem. I went through Dell to try and correct this situation but the "geniuses" there have not helped me to correct this situation. It says Driver error or something. What should I do to correct this problem? I have no idea which Driver could have caused this problem. There are more experts on this site than at Dell.
