I get a blue screen with white writing that says Windows has encountered a serious problem. I went through Dell to try and correct this situation but the "geniuses" there have not helped me to correct this situation. It says Driver error or something. What should I do to correct this problem? I have no idea which Driver could have caused this problem. There are more experts on this site than at Dell.

If you have Windows XP there is a log you can check. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. From the Computer Management window under System Tools expand Event Viewer. There are three log files that Windows keeps: Application, Security, and System. Check the System log first and look for any events that have a Yellow or Red icon next to them. You can double click on the event to bring up more detail and usually a link to more information about the event. See if you can uncover something that helps you determine what the cause is.

If there is a Driver error run Windows Update and make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card, sound card, and the like from the manufacturers.

If this still doesn't resolve the issue disable all non-Microsoft services and reboot the computer. Then, one-by-one, start enabling them until you computer encounters the problem again. To do this go to Start > Run and in the Open window type msconfig and click OK.

From the System Configuration Utility window click on the Services tab and at the bottom of the screen check the Hide All Microsoft Services box. Once the Microsoft services have been hidden, disable the rest of the services. You can also click on the Startup tab and disable applications that are starting up such as Office and iTunes. Once done click Apply and then OK and restart your computer.

If you find additional information on the problem from Event Viewer please add it to you question and that will help diagnose the problem.

Whats the last driver you installed? I have seen this problem a lot lately, and I am wondering if its not something to do with windows, or Flash.. However, the errors related to windows or flash would be a stack dump error crash. My guess for you would be the last driver you installed, More leaning twards the wireless driver if you have that.. If you do have a wireless, then go to control panel, system, hardware, and then device manager, look for anything with a yellow question mark, If there are none, then open the networking and find your wireless driver, uninstall it. and reboot. it should detect it and want to install new drivers. let it do it, If you have the cd be sure to point it to the cd so it can get the original drivers. If you found the yellow question mark, then select that item and uninstall the driver, and reboot. if it finds a new driver thats compatable, and you still have the yellow questionmark, search on google for drivers and the device name. check the manufactures website for drivers that are compatable with your OS.

If you still have problems post another question with the OS that your useing and the details of the error, (Stack Dump) or whatever it says..

If we still can't help you here is a great site for posting technical computer questions, www.helponthe.net (the techguy).. Its free to post here and someone will help you, eventually, Be sure to include your OS, windows what? and the version of IE, that your useing. (check the help and about internet explorer, for the version of IE, and right click my computer and select properties for the windows version. Hope this helps....

The blue screen with those error messages? It's called the Blue Screen Of Death, or BSOD.

During the bootup, the computer checks everything, and I mean EVERYTHING to see if all the drivers and hardware are working properly. If all goes well, then you should see your desktop screen with all your program icons on the screen. If not, the BSOD pops up telling you that something has screwed up somewhere.

It then asks you to either continue what you're doing or to reboot it. If you reboot it, it will go to an annoying mode called "Safe Mode". This is a diagnositc mode that lets you pinpoint the problem there. But most people don't bother going into Safe Mode because people don't know how to do it. Plus, whenever they get that BSOD, they get frustrated because the computer failed to boot up and they want to get on the computer right away!
