I'm uploading video from my camera, and can't even get the computer to recognize the cable. It may be a bad cable but maybe I need to do something different with video? When I have flash cards or any other device plugged into my laptop, it recognizeds the new hardware right away. I can't figure out what i'm doing wrong....and I still have to figure out then how to edit the video once i get it on my machine!

Did the camera come with a CD? Often you have to install a driver for the camera before Windows will recognize it. Check to see if there is a driver for the camera on the CD. Install that, reboot, and replug the camera. Hopefully it will see it after that.

It maybe worth checking if the cable is securely connected to your camera and to the computer's USB port.

Cameras such as Sony or Canon require an application to be installed on your computer. This application includes the drivers required to allow your camera to synchronize with your computer. Make sure this application (usually packaged into a CD that comes with the camera when purchased) is installed first in your computer.

The video editing software is usually included in the camera and also comes in a CD. I'm sure you won't have problems editing the video if you've installed these applications in your computer.
