Does such a thing even exist? I have Norton Internet Security 2005 and hate it! Sure, it's great at catching things and has lots of options, but it takes up almost all of my system resources! Granted, my processor isn't the newest version, but I've got 512 MB of RAM, and my cpu usage is constantly at 100%!!!
I love to play with XP... I have to be able to tweak my programs... I do love that about Norton. I'm always installing and trying new things (it's my make & break machine) so I always have things backed up. Repairing things is the best way to learn! I'm not a novice, but not an expert either, and know about msconfig and all of the basic stuff for system performance, so that isn't part of the problem!
My computer always works great after I dump the system and star over... UNTIL I install Norton, and it has 5 or 6 things constantly running and really bogs it down!
Thanks in advance for suggestions! Any more advanced tips on system management are welcome too!

I have Norton 2005 and have only 512mb RAM. I have no problem. I think there may be a couple other things you might check:
- Are you using a complex screensaver - it runs in the background and eats memory. I had fun with mine, then changed it to blank.
- How many programs do you load at startup? Maybe you should check it out and ensure you are running just what you need.
- re: system maintenance:
1. From IE, click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k., and Restart
2. click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools – run Disk Cleanup
3. Temporarily close Quick Launch:
Right-click on the Taskbar, click Toolbars, deselect Quick Launch
4. Open My Computer
right-click on C:
click Properties
click Tools, select Error Check (check all and fix), when finished
click defrag & run
5. click Start, Run ipconfig renew (type ipconfig space renew)
6. Restart. Right-click on Taskbar, click Toolbars, select Quick Launch
All these things should be done regularly. The more frequently they are run, the less time they take.

It has more background processes running which uses more computer memory. Also Aero is a resource heavy desktop replacement. Not really a problem since 2gb of memory is cheaper today than 512 was when XP came out. Vista has improvements, but not really the leap forward people were expecting. Where is the 64bit operating system?

CPU usage is not the asme as using all your resources. Using all your resources would be having 100% of RAM being taken up and having no available cache. AVG and spybot search and destroy are lighter than norton and are free.

I have been running AVG for anti-virus software and it works great better than Norton.I also use Ad Aware for Spyware removal and it also does a great job. Both are free versions.

Hello, your best bet is to use the free antivirus program from AVG! http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01#Features. It is so fast! hardly any cpu usage used and it takes about 2 seconds to open.
