Maintenance & Repairs - August 2007

So yeah, I just bought my dream car. It runs great except for one thing. When I take my foot off the gas (at low speeds only) or brake (which kind of leads me to believe it's the brakes) it makes this grinding noise. Now, the guy told me he replaced the brake pads (I checked, he did), but not the rotors. The rotors have about a half inch of rush around the outside, so maybe it's that. I'm thinking it's my differential. How do I know if it's bad? Would it grind like this? It only makes the noise while slowing down (also, I think one rotor maybe warped).

If it IS the differential, how much am I looking at to repair it? ...can it be repaired?

For the last couple of days, my car is very sluggish when I accelerate. The RPMs look fine, but the car feels like it's almost redlining to get moving. This happens from stop to first, first to second, etc. Once I'm at speed it seems normal.

Also, I discovered tonight that when I put it into idle and release the clutch, the engine doesn't die.

Fuel issue or transmission issue?

Are they ok to use on my leather and also for spot treatments if something is spilled or such?

Any advice on using it? (Like not using it if the leather is going to have sunlight shining on it)

Also what is the best way to keep my leather from wrinkling so much or appearing rough?

Hi, I have a civic lx 96, automatic, I was wondering is there any advantage in switching over to syntheic oil for motor and transmission oil as well. So far, I'm using the stock oil for every transmission oil change and just some shell motor oil for the motor. Thanks

This is on North Harlem Ave in Chicago. First of all the tried to get me to pay extra for all the stuff that "needs" to be serviced. They put 2 gaskets on my oil filter which started spraying oil all over the ground the moment they started the car. They put the wrong tire pressure which is clearly shown on the side of the door of every car! Stay away from this place. They will put whatever the want in your car instead of the right stuff. If you do go there, don't go sit at the waiting area. Be right next to your car and make sure they are doing the right things and ASK what are they doing.

Better yet, if you have a garage, change your own oil and filter. I don't have a garage so i have to deal with these monkeys.

Imagine I drove on the highway with the oil filter spraying my oil all over the place. My engine would've been severely damaged.

I had hit the curb, and my right front tire is no aligned, i have to save money to get the alignment, if i keep driving w/o it, will it cause any serious damage?

And my left front tire looks a little flat, just a tad, when i get my car aligned, can i ask them to pump them up a little bit more, and check my tire pressure? Will they charge me for it? If so how much?

Thank you!

I have a 1994 Ford Thunderbird 4.6L V-8 and every time i use my blinker or my wipers or the power windows or sun roof while going down the road my Volts read from 13.5V down to 9-10V. I notice it most when i use my blinker going down the road, everytime it blinks my volt meter shows from 13.5 down to 9 to 10V. The car use to have a AMP 1200W running off the battery what do you guys think? could it just be a electronic problem with the car?

A week ago I was driving and I smelled smoke and I thought it was someone elses car until I saw the smoke coming from my car. I pulled over and opened up my hood, the engine was smoking. My oil pressure light had been on for months, I dismissed it as a bad fuse because the wiring in my car is bad and because I get my oil changed very often. After it smoked, the oil pressure light went off. I drove it yesterday and after ten minutes of driving it began smoking again and the oil pressure light reappeared. I let it cool down and tried driving it home and it started to smoke again so I had to pull over aagain. The place where I put my oil in at felt very hot. My dipstick comes up saying that there is oil in the car so could it be my oil pressure sending unit? What else could be the cause and is it even worth fixing? I dont want to spend alot on the car because I don't plan on keeping it much longer. Thank you

I took my car to get an inspection sticker yesterday. I am female and I went alone. (my first mistake) They said my car failed because "the rear struts are leaking". They offered to fix it for $178.00. Instead, I took the car to my dad and had him look at it first. He was a mechanic for 30 years. He says there is nothing wrong with the rear struts. Now what do I do? The store I took it to already tore off half the sticker and said I need to come back there to get the new one once it is "fixed". I paid 18.50 for the failed inspection. I need some advice. I live in Maine.

When I turn the engine off, it takes at least an hour to turn back on. Sometimes it doesn't though. It seems to have a mind of it's own. It only has 40,000 miles on it. Also, I know when it is not going to start up right away when I turn the engine off, the doors will not automatically unlock. It also makes a strange clicking sound when I run the car. People tell me it might be the computer in the car. Does anyone know what this might be and how much it might cost. I don't think it is the starter, because the problem has been a couple of months.

My parents' 1996 Cadillac DeVille was giving a low coolant warning. As I was checking it out, I noticed a tag that recommended only using silicate free antifreeze/coolant.

I'm not very familiar with this. What exactly is silicate free antifreeze? Can I get it at any autoparts store, or do I have to go to a dealer?

Thanks.

I wasn't able to start my car and I didn't know it was the battery because the alarm keeps going off when I try to start it so I walked 2 blocks down to a auto shop and one of the guys came with a booster and boost the car so it started and I drove into there auto shop and notice once I turn off the car it woudnt start again probaly because I didnt charge it enough. Later on he used had a machine that he plugged in to the wall and to the car to charge. I waited for about 30 minutes then he said it woudnt charge and the batter is no good. I bought a ac delco battery 35 with 6 years warranty. Did I get ripped off ? I think I did... This is my brothers car 96 es 300 he had it for about 5 years and never had 1 time to jumpstart the car. Let me know what you guys think .

I done a full tune up, new distruber cap, cables, sprak plug.... new PCV valve new air filter

still planing on taking EGR valve off and cleaning it

after i did all this the hydrocarbons ppm went up another 100, few mechanics told me it went up due to better and full combustion creating more exhaust

Hydro carbonsa readings are now almost 500ppm and inspections requires less then 220ppm

I do all the work myself was thinking maybe replacing the Catlic convertor and the oxygen sensor

What else should i do?
