Because it takes a LOT of hp to turn the compressor. In the eighties me and some friends all comuted to work in small Nissans and Toyotas. Our running joke was when we needed more power we would turn on the 'boost' by turning 'off' the AC.

you turn on the ac, thats yet another component your engine has to run. the ac compressor takes a lot and is very heavy, if you really dont want to lose any horsepower take that crap out and just ride with the windows down. most guys do that weight reduction first thing cause that thing along with the ducts weigh a crapload. i dont use my ac anyways unless its raining..saves gas like whoa

it takes power to operate the compressor. when the a/c is turned on, some power is used to ensure the compressor works and the engine has a set amount of horsepower which is determined by the engine size. when the a/c operates it requires horsepower to do so.

To keep it quick and simple, the ac cable is connected to your engine. Usually located close to the timing belt. AC uses 5-10% of the engines power. You should feel the car being weaker, but not by much. There isn't much you can do about it. Unless you want to take out your AC.

the a/c is a whole seperate motor. most compressors include 4 cyclinders. that is just extra power taken from your motor before it is delivered to your flywheel. as a manual fan does as well. htat is what most people will do first off when trying to lighten a car up and increase power. remove a/c and install an electric fan.

You must have a small engine. It takes a lot of power to run a compressor. As long as your vehicle doesn't stall, you are fine.
Good luck to you!
