So yeah, I just bought my dream car. It runs great except for one thing. When I take my foot off the gas (at low speeds only) or brake (which kind of leads me to believe it's the brakes) it makes this grinding noise. Now, the guy told me he replaced the brake pads (I checked, he did), but not the rotors. The rotors have about a half inch of rush around the outside, so maybe it's that. I'm thinking it's my differential. How do I know if it's bad? Would it grind like this? It only makes the noise while slowing down (also, I think one rotor maybe warped).

If it IS the differential, how much am I looking at to repair it? ...can it be repaired?

How much would new bearings cost?

It would be obvious if it was the differential. Just let off the gas without touching the brakes and see if the noise is still there. Diffs aren't too bad to rebuild if you find an honest shop.

it's probably neither the rotors or the diff. it's probably the rear brake shoes and drums. they go bad about 1/2 the rate of the disk pads.
if the diff needs to be checked, and you have the ability and a few small tools, jack up both sides, and put it in neutral and manually turn the drive shaft. you should also have the rear diff fluid checked, as well as check the grease in the front wheel bearings. a bad bearing could cause the noise and a $10 lube job, or a full oil and lube may very well solve the problem but if a bearing is going out, fix it before it locks up or does serious damage.

If it`s grinding on decel, where is the noise coming from? Rust could cause a minor noise, and possibly pulsing when you apply the brakes. Have you checked the diff fluid? Slim but possible that its the gears, in which case it should also make a noise on accel. Swap out the rotors and go from there.

Rust is normal. but you don't say if the rear pads are ok. It's not the differential either. More than likely, you have a bad bearing in teh rear axle.

Take the car to a shop and have that verified. If one bearing is bad, have both sides replaced.

take the tires off, then remove the brake calipers, then sipn the driveshaft, you can do this with the car on jackstands and front wheels blocked, then start it up and put it in drive, if you still hear clunking , it probably is the rearend, dont touch the brake pedal at all while you are doing this test. or you will pop the pistons out of the calipers

if tis a manual you might want to check the clutch and cluth assembly and the flywheel. you might need to get the rotos cut just in case especially if they have a lip on the edge. and to check the diff. just take off the protector plate for the rear axel center bell housing.
