Find out why the belt is breaking and fix that.

If you want a better answer, provide a little detail. When was the belt OK? What happened that the belt got replaced? How is it breaking (what does it look like)?

If the belt is properly installed and all of the items the either drive the belt or get driven by the belt are rotating, there is no belt problem. So either it is not being installed correctly or something is seized up, or...

Make sure there are no rough edges on any of the pulleys. Check the alignment of the pulleys. Use a natural rubber belt, 10~15 dollars, instead of these neoprene el-cheapo belts that cost 2 dollars.

Make sure there are no locked pulleys, like the alternator, or any accessory drive pulleys. I suppose you are referring to the air cooled Volkswagen, since the H2O cooled did not become popular until '74.

If I am right, make sure the blower is nice and free, as well. If any of the pulleys are hard to turn by hand (except the crankshaft pulley) there might be trouble there.

Check to be sure the generator/fan assembly turns freely and isn't froze up or binding. If that's OK adjust the belt tension by moving the generator pulley shims from behind the nut to between the pulley halves.

check the pulleys for wear or a burr that might be on it,and also make sure its running in line with the other pulleys, usually that's what causes them to break on those, that's a fun car to drive,i have owned a few of them, great on gas also, but check those things,i think you,ll find the problem with it,good luck on it.

When you install it, check the tightening force. It must have a lose play of about 0.5cm between the two main pulleys. Fine tune it while securing the alternator.

Well, seeing how that is an interference motor there is a good chance of bending the valve. Best bet is to get it towed and be prepared for a hefty repair bill.
