It's a 97 VW Jetta GLS. It has many electrical problems that come and go. The engine light was on for about three weeks and then transmission light came on for about five minutes. It was stuck in second gear in safe mode for about a week and then all of a sudden yesterday it finally changed gears and the engine light went off. I took it to a mechanic and he said after driving it w/the transmission in 2nd gear it needed a new number 6 cyllindroid. Now that the problem appears to have fixed itself I don't know if I should keep it or trade it in on a different car worth about $9,000. There are only 109k miles on it. The engine light has been coming off and on for some time now and I think it might be the after market radio that was put in causing electrical problems. I took it to Carmax and they only offered me $750 as a trade in and I know I could get more than that, VW's go forever. Any advice would be appreciated!

I have one of those 24 inch blacklight bolts from walmart thats 27 watts. i was wondering if it would be possible to wire it as an accessory light in my 95 chevy S-10. would it fry the bulb? or would it not be enough power to turn it on? or would it just work fine?

My car's alignment was fine (2000 Chrysler Cirrus LX). It was time for an oil change, so I figured I'd get the tires rotated as well. Now my alignment is off--it veers to the right. The mechanic says the rotation revealed the need for the alignment. Is he right, or am I getting ripped off? Thanks in advance!

My Dad rotated the tires in September and the front end started to vibrate so I had the tires balanced, which fixed the problem. A couple of days ago I put air in my tires because they were low and now the front end is vibrating again in much the same way it did before I had the tires balanced. Is it possible the tires need to be balanced again already?

This refers to when you're coasting or when you're going down a slope and in either case, you're not pressing your foot on the accelerator.

I just got my alternator replaced and the belts squeak. Is this because the belts were undertightened or overtightened? Also the belts only squeak when I turn either left or right but not when im driving straight. When I turn, the dash lights on my car dim a little or sometimes a lot. What can I do to fix this? I dont want my car to die out because the alternator is not charging the battery or something. Please Help

and while i'm asking questions about my car already (1996 mercury villager) My rear drivers side brake light was out- so i went to the auto parts store and purchased a new one (i used their book to get the right number)- but now whenever the lights are on- the drivers side in the back ALWAYS looks like the brake light is on- what is causing this?
p.s. My 'break' light has been turning on in the dash lately- would this have any effect or anything on it? Did i get the wrong bulb? Did i not install it correctly? I've never had issues changing the bulbs before... thanks in advance for the help.

1996 Mercury Villager. At xmas time I opened the back hatch to get presents out and take into the house- well my bf didn't shut the back door properly - ie he didn't flip the black 'lock' thing back into the door- so when it shut- it didnt totally shut. Anyways - by the time i realized the back inside light was on and it kept popping up that a door wasn't closed all the way- It was too cold out and the lock must have froze? The door will not latch when i close it. I've gotten deicer and tried like 5 times- i've had my mom help me- my brother help me- and we cannot get it to latch when the door gets closed. Because the light stays on in the rear for 60 minutes when the door is open back there- everytime you turn off the car or open the doors or whatever- it's wore my battery dead 2x. Finally i just took out the back lightbulbs- hoping until the weather gets warmer this will help... Apparently it didn't- because once again my battery is almost completely dead!

the break light on my car keeps coming on but it does not stay on. It only turns on once I go over 40mph. We check the break fluid and it was full. What could be wrong? Could the fact that we are in the middle of a deep freeze and I park outside have something to do with it?

Went to start my van today (1996 Mercury Villager) to go to work- and it wouldn't start. It had some 'juice' in it- but wouldn't completely 'turn over'? How do I know if the battery is just dead (or almost dead-ie not enough 'juice' to start the car) or if it's just because it's been sitting outside all night long and it's -20 outside??? Thanks in advance for the help.

I have an Alda scooter that recommends that I use SAE#20 motor oil. I've looked all over town however, and so far, I haven't found SAE20, only SAE20-50. Is that safe to use? If not, do you have any idea where I can find SAE20 oil?

What pitfalls await an inexperienced fool who lacks the money to take his truck to the garage and thinks he might try to change his own water pump. The guys at Checker say it should be easy but I am a little nervous. Easy to those with experience could end up getting me in lots of trouble....fast. I have the Heaton manual but I think they must have left a lot of information out of that as well. Any suggestions? Is this really a project for a rookie, as they say, or am I asking for disaster? What are the hidden minefields?
