Auto Zone can not scan your vehicle. 1989 was not equipped with OBD II, which is the system Auto Zone can scan. The computer systems were not to advanced in 89' so more then likely you have an emissions code in the system - possible oxygen sensor not reading correctly. You will need to take it to a repair shop that has the computer to scan it to find out for sure.

The little chip that monitors basic engine functions knows there's something wrong and you need to take it to a mechanic to find out what's wrong. It'll stay lit until you fix it, or the light burns out, or the car goes up in a puff of smoke because you didn't get it fixed.

Several things can cause this to happen. Go to your nearest AutoZone and they will scan it free and tell you what the problem is. Some things need to be fixed ASAP and some are not crucial.

most common is oxygen sensor, check all fluid levels.
Go to auto zone, some stores in the Midwest will check it for free and reset it, Of course they would like to sell you the part, nothing wrong with that.

a fuse out, a censor out, any low fluids.
I would take it to a auto shop and let them hook it up to their computer and see what it is.
otherwise they have at home computers you can hook up to your car, at any Auto parts store has them and that would tell you why it is on.
