A friend of mine recently had to replace his car battery on his Renault Scenic, guess how much it cost?
£57 for the battery + £120 to have it installed due to the need to recode all the electrics.
So we car owners have a choice, have our cars broken in to by thieves or get robbed by the garages.
What do you think?

I believe that alloys are a complete and utter waste of time, difficult to keep looking OK.
The need to have locking wheel nuts a real bind, (especially if you buy a used car and the seller has hidden or lost the key and
the tyres seem to lose pressure more easily, why do we bother with things that make life more difficult.

Will any mechanic know how to work on a hybrid or are there just specialized mechanics?

My girlfriend has recently been having problems with her car. When she turns on her car the RPM's will sometimes go to 2 or above and then slowly drop back down to 1 RPM.When she puts it in gear(automatic transmission) it will sometimes take off by itself without giving it gas.It accelerates to a point where you have to press the brake or it will just keep going on her. After awhile of driving the car settles back down and acts like nothing has happened.Just the other day she was low on fuel so she stopped to gas up and headed for work. When she got out of work to go home the car didn't want to start. The only way to get the car to start was to turn the key and pump the gas to get it started but then when you get your foot off the gas pedal the car would turn back off.The check engine light is not on and doesn't come on at all so i'm thinking it's not a sensor but I am just mindboggled about this.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Went skiing yesterday. Before leaving Lake Louise to drive back to Calgary I practically had to excavate my old 91 Ford Exploder from all the snow! Threw it into 4x4, and just left it in 4x4 for the whole drive. On the way I was eyeing the gas needle and wondering if it actually was going down faster than when I drive in 2x4. Not sure. I just remember that I heard some clown somewhere say something about you'll use the same amount of fuel because the transfer case is always moving, even when not engaged in 4x4. Seems fishy to me since if the transfer case indeed is already moving, but you the engage 4x4, then there's more of a LOAD, which mean more RESISTANCE, so more force needed to move the vehicle, so more fuel expended. Actually, wait...doesn't the transfer case just divide the power between front and back? I donno, I'm all messed up, what's the scoop people? Don't just say yes or no...explain it if you can)

I just checked my oil and the level is slightly above (1 inch) full on the dipstick. I just had it changed about 1 week ago and have driven 450 miles. Is this a big deal? Should I return to the place that did the oil change and have them drain some oil? There have been no warning lights or anything.

I have a 2000 Chevy Impala, 3.4 V6

The car ran great until it overheated and blew a head gasket. Other then leaking water there was nothing wrong with it.

So I took the car apart and replaced the head gaskets and put it back togater.

When I started the car for the first time it started to smoke. The smoke would not go away. The biggest problem is that when you as much of touch the gas pedal or even put on the ac wich revs the car a little, the car starts to back-fire to the point that it just turns off.

Again there was nothing like this before, and this is a least the 10th time I am replacing a head gasket, but I can't imagine what it could be. If you have any thoughts.. please share. Thanks

Three years ago it's top speed is 120 km/h at 3,000rpm. Now, it only run up to 100 km/h at 6,000rpm, BEYOND the red zone.

Seems like the engine needs a sixth (6th) gear.

What could possibly be the problem?

Can I adjust the drivetrain by adjusting some screws or nuts?

Should I swap transmission?

Is it the CLUTCH?

On a 2001 C-5 Vette, there is an on-board computer that monitors "oil life remaining". Let me preface my question and rule out "opinions", PLEASE, just the facts, just the TRUTH ... !

What is the percentage of "oil life remaining" that the oil should be changed at ? I've been changing it at around 45% and that gets me about 3500 miles or so. I've come to believe that that is way too soon and I am simply throwing my money away. What does GM, or a very knowledgeable Corvette Engineer say ???
How does 10 % remaining sound ? Isn't that the purpose of the computer monitor ? And what about changing the filter in between oil changes ??? Is there a truly BEST oil filter for this car ?

THANKS in advance,

Richard

It has been bitter cold the last few day's, I just went out to my car, and it won't start, it sounded like it was trying to, but the more I tried, the more my battery seemed to be losing juice, so I stopped, because I didn't want to run down the battery, is it because it's been so cold, that my car won't start?

I don't know much about cars and I own a Nissan Frontier that has a supercharged engine and it clearly states on the gas cap that Premium gas is "recommended" so I am satisfied with putting Unleaded Plus, but my brother and his friends claim that filling this supercharged engine with anything less than Premium will damage and eventually destroy the engine.

I disagree because a recommendation is only a suggestion...not a requirement.

Can someone help me settle this debate?

I have an older '83 Datsun 4 x truck that has always been a good reliable truck. Without warning all of a sudden it starts making a tapping noise, and in low gear it has little power. I have not driven it since, because I think it may be a rod ready to go, even though it has oil in it. Could it be a lifter or what? Once you get it in a higher gear it runs fine but still has that tapping noise.
